77C in bf3 with my 2500k

Thread Starter
My i5 is pretty new and it hadn't been going over 64c full load until recently. I noticed that I was getting some microstutter in bf3 and figured it was lag, but just now I check my temps an they were up at 77c.

I assume this is not a safe temp to operate at? My i5 is at stock clocks with the factory cooler/paste. Is this a problem?

Does thermal paste normally brake down in a month or two? The weather has been a bit warmer, but it hasn't been THAT warm.

I guess I should just go ahead and grab a new cooler, any recommendations for a cheap yet effective one? Looking to push past 4ghz, which was much too hot with stock cooler.

EDIT: It seems to be at 55c idel frown.gif

If you are on a budget then grab a hyper 212 or hyper 212 evo biggrin.gif What you can try in the mean time is replacing the thermal paste that came with the intel stock cooler with some MX-4, mx-2, shin-etsu, ocz, and many other types of TIM. 77c may be high for some people but if it doesn't break 80 then i dont see it as a problem.... just dont stress test it because if it hits that high during bf3 then in stress test im sure it's much much much higher.

Ivest in a good cooler. Hyper 212+ is among the highest recomended for a reason...

cheap and works great!!!

Will allow you to OC your cpu to about 4.3ish with good temps.

You are fine with 77c on load, but 55c idle seems kinda high. Depends on TIM does it want to brake down in months or not (don't know what they are nowadays, but I had crappy stuff on my earlier CPU Q8200), Artic Cooling haves nice MX-4 TIM that lasts "8 years", dont know about 8years but durable tho and nice heat transfering. If you want to overclock, I recommend to get new cooler for that beast CPU smile.gif Its always nicer to have new cooler and lower temps than saving money and getting higher temps biggrin.gif

I do want to chime in and mention that bf3 is a tough game on the cpu. Both my amd 1100t at 4.2ghz and the 2500k at 4.8ghz are within 5-7c of my max temp while stress testing on prime when I play bf3.

So 77c is ok? Will the evo/plus fit well enough in my case? I think I am going to get the 212. And thanks everyone who responded.

77c is acceptable temps. Wont damage or hurt anything. 212+ will fit in your case. My i5 2500k is about 7c or so from my max temp while playing BF3 too.

Isn't the max stated by Intel for the chip like ~72c...?

Based on how my friend's i5-2400 still runs @ 3.7Ghz with the stock cooler/paste,
I'd say that 77c is a lot warmer than I'd expect...

... Does your GPU run pretty warm then...?

If he has a good chip, he can go higher than that. Max temp is 98C so if you keep it below 85C I see no problem with 4.5-4.8
