gaming laptop <1000$

Thread Starter
i decided to get a new laptop for gaming when i'm abroad, which is quite a lot, instead of replacing the 560 sli to a 7970.

my current laptop is a HP pavilion dv4.

my main use will be gaming, so that's top priority. i also want to spend as little as possible, so vfm is my main concern here. the rest is marginal - audio/size/weight/connectivity etc. - doesn't matter. if anything, the bigger the screen, the better.

i've been looking at bestbuy, but the variety is staggering, and what's more i have no idea how good the different graphics cards are - finding a review is almost impossible since there's so many models around.
i know an M560 isn't as good as my 560 etc., but i don't know how good it actually will be.

i don't need a powerhouse that'll run skyrim on max settings, like my pc, but i do want a laptop that'll run it smoothly, without looking too ugly..

suggestions anyone?

Something with an i5 or i7 and a GT540m or higher...

Lenovo with i5 and GT555 $799

Alienware M11x for portable gaming $899

Look at notebookcheck.net for comparison of mobile graphics. I would directly link it but its blocked where I am at.

Sub $1000... as Sepheroth said the Y570 is a good choice. HP HP DV6t or the HP DV6z can be had with amd 7690m gpu and varients of intel i7's and i5's and even amd processor if u like.$700 - $800 with coupons floating around. Amd 7690m and gt555m are equal in the GPU department. Neither of these are really designed with the cooling a true gaming machine will have but are good values and will game pretty well.

You could grab a Sager/Clevo 8130 with an i5 and a 560m for under $1000 if you have a copy of windows or about $1050 with windows included. 8130

This will stomp on both previous mentioned machines and has the cooling to match the power within. HP and Lenovo both have good outlets if you want to find a bargain. Don't buy from BB.

As i wrote this the 8130 @ Malibal has ran out of the stock screen so it is only offered with the 95% gamut upgraded screens @ a $95 increase over the previous mentioned prices. Xotic pc ran out of their 8130's entirely Saturday night. CPU/GPU refresh is around the corner so these are at a very limited availability.
