3 years? We get mostly console ports on PC that dont even make use of more than 2 threads. The next gen consoles MIGHT be able to do 4 to 8... Assuming they can that would not make them obsolete until around 2020 when the next consoles come out ;-) I expect my SB to be ADEQUATE for 3 years. Obsolete in 8. I'll sell it next year LOL

We only get stuff using 2-3 cores because there's no need for the CPU power using 4+ really provides in gaming right now, once the graphical quality in games goes up (ie. with a new console release) the amount of CPU power required will too; and single threaded IPC/high clocks can only get you so far; the amount of cores a console has really means nothing for PCs.

And I still will be till 2015 at least apparently. I don't see the last editions of C2Q's really falling behind till about then, as most of what I do is multitasking or playing LoL these days. I really just want to avoid the back end of a socket like I caught on 775. Although at this rate, anytime buying an Intel will be the back end of a sockets life cycle.

The thing about this is...That even current Sandy Bridge CPU's are still very valid CPU's...Heck even the 1366 990x's are very valid processors...(Not for the 1000 dollar price tag any longer, however still valid if you already have them)

I do not see me upgrading my current rig for at least 3-4 years...Unless it is a minor GPU upgrade or something...Seems much of a waste for me to even consider Ivy Bridge

Why do people want Intel to keep the same old socket with the same platform for a long time? When I upgrade my CPU, it's usually time for an entirely new platform with new features.

Also, it's only about $100 for a mid range Z68 mobo, so if you can't afford an extra $100 every 3 or so years for your upgrade, then I don't know what to tell you.

Seriously. I cannot understand why people think that AMD is "the way to go" because they use the same platform for 15 years. You CPU doesn't deserve to be stuck in an ancient board that wasn't designed with your processor in mind.

Yeah...oh well. Whenever I upgrade, I am excited to get a nice, shiny new board.

This. especially with Intel. In the last 5 years

AMD has gone from AM2 to AM2+ to AM3 to AM3+. while maintaining some sort of compatibility with newer chips on older boards.

Intel has done 775 to 1366/1156 to 2011/1155, with absolutely zero cross compatibility.
