Confused and could use some help please.

Ok so I have looking at making a small upgrade to my rig by upgrading the CPU, still need to make sure whatever I get is compatible with my mobo but for now I was just looking around on ebay for prices.

I was looking at a Pentium D 945 3.4 GHz which based on specs alone should be a huge upgrade compared to my Celeron E1500.

The Pentium has way more L2 cache and slightly less L1 cache and a much higher clock speed.

Here are the specs on both according to cpu-world.com

Manufacturer Intel
Family Pentium D
Model/processor number 945
OEM part number(s) HH80553PG0964MN
Box part number(s) BX80553945
BX80553945R
Microarchitecture Netburst
Technology (micron) 0.065
Core name Presler
Frequency (MHz) 3400
Bus speed 800
L1 cache (KB) 32 KB (data)
L2 cache (KB) 4096
Socket Socket 775

Manufacturer Intel
Family Celeron Dual-Core
Model/processor number E1500
OEM part number(s) HH80557PG049D
Box part number(s) BX80557E1500
BXC80557E1500
Microarchitecture Core
Technology (micron) 0.065
Core name Allendale
Frequency (MHz) 2200
Bus speed 800
L1 cache (KB) 64 KB (code) / 64 KB (data)
L2 cache (KB) 512
Socket Socket 775

Now according to all the benchmarks there the E1500 is almost always better than the Pentium D.

I have tried finding other benches to compare but am not coming up with much so I was hoping I could access some of your guy's personal experience and knowledge.

Am I wrong here? Is the E1500 I already have really better? Doesn't make much sense to me.

Thanks in advance!

I can tell you the E1500 is not a massive amount better than the Pentium D, but yes it is better. I have a Celeron E1400(2Ghz) and a Pentium D 820(2.80Ghz).

The benchmarking tests I have put both processors through (on exactly the same system), the Celeron has always come out on top, albeit not by much.

Gotta say that's really surprising, wonder why. Was really hoping for a cheap upgrade lol.

Thanks very much for responding to my question!

The Pentium D is approximately 3 years older than the Celron E series. So I assume a slightly adjusted architecture. E1400 came out in 2008 from what I understand and I think Pentium D 820 came out in 2005. Your Pentium D 945 actually came out in 2006. 2 Years before the Celeron E1400/1500.
