Wireless Issues

Thread Starter
Hi everyone,

There was an addition put on to my house that has walls about twice as thick as normal walls. My office is part of this new addition and the wireless router is trying to penetrate this wall.

Here is where I am at. I have 2 Laptops and a net-book and their wireless signal goes through the wall completely fine, almost full power. However, when I use the Dlink-DWA-556 PCI Express Extreme Adapter on my PC the signal wont reach and if it does its "poor" and extremely slow. I have changed the channels on my router to every channel it doesn't matter. I also changed it from 2.4GHZ to 5Ghz and it doesn't matter.

Furthermore, I had an old Wireless b/g adapter laying around I think its a Linksys(at work so I can't recall). and it doesn't work at all. I am wondering what it is about the laptop wireless card that is so much better. I ruled out the PC being the issue because I have a brand new desktop I just bought and the same problem on that. So I don't think its a driver issue, and I have the latest drivers on all the cards I tried. To rule the computer out as being an issue even more I picked it up and put it in the same room as the wireless router and it gets perfect 300MBPS speeds.

So I bought bigger antennas for the card (got Rosewell ones), and still same issue.

Any wireless cards you recommend that have great range and would work? I know the wireless will work because it works fine on laptops and netbooks now I just need a card that can do it.

Please help, I am getting a bit cranky and I am sure the wife would love for me to stop *****ing about it.

How are all your antennas orientated and where it the wireless card on your PC facing. I've had issues in the past there I had to turn the back of the PC so it was facing in the direction of the wireless router.

As for antenna positioning, keep in mind that most antennas are omni-directional and emit wireless signals in a donut like shape around a vertical antenna. So if you have the router and the PC on the same level, having all antenna's vertical is ideal.

I've seen too many people position the antennas in different directions hoping to get better reception (not saying you have, just an idea).

Thanks for your reply. Basically I just have the antenna's pointing straight up there are three of them. My PC is on the ground next to my desk. I can try lifting the PC off the ground and see if its any better. Obviously I not using my laptop on the ground so I can try elevating the PC and see if that makes things better.

Any advice on a different card if that has no or little effect? I don't want to go out and buy a bunch of stuff and it not work at the same time though.

I don't know of a specific card off the top of my head, but I wouldn't recommend one with an external antenna that can be positioned individually of the PC itself.

Another option is an actual wireless bridge instead.

Just wanted to report back on my situation. Nothing has helped I have tried moving the antennas every which way straight up seems to be the best and if I am lucky I get one bar, while three of my laptops in the exact same spot get perfect signal, yet two PC's I have with two different cards have zero signal. I am going to buy a USB Wireless N adapter and see what happens.

maybe try an antenna that has some cord on it, that way you can move the actual antennas themselves on top of the pc or even up higher on your desktop
