Aah okay fair enough....

I dunno about you but a reference card clocked to over 1700mhz.... there's no guarantee of anything beating that, lightning or not.

Personally I am interested in the Lightning because it has 4 DP ports. I was going to get a DC2, but that card seems to be a bust. I just want a card that can perform as good as reference, but do it quietly and run Eyefinity on all the same port types.

Rumor had it that Msi and Sapphire were releasing much higher oc'd cards thus justifying the OC gpu advertisement. Not everyone wants to crank up there card and void the warranty and risk damaging the card. I for one like to upgrade every year and sell my previous cards. A factory oc'd 7970 at 1300mhz would have been awesome. I'll pass with all the drama with stability and crashes with overclocking a card well past is factory clock. I want speed/stability and reliability. If sapphire doesn't deliver I'm going with kepler.

Somebody correct me if I a wrong, but I don't think overclocking voids an MSI warranty.

You'll never see a 7970 factory OC'd to 1300 MHz, I can bet you my sig rig on that. What you're asking for is unreasonable. Reaching that kind of clock is hard enough on golden chips. For a manufacturer to go through that kind of binning and bundle a cooler that can handle the extra speed and voltage just isn't worth it. You'd be paying more than premium for it if such a card ever existed.

You are correct. They also allow the changing of the cooler (aka watercooling). Only thing is, the warrenty is non transferable.

Also!!!! Exciting news all, that "gpu reactor" comes pre installed on the card, so it does not cost any extra!!!! A little birdie told me...ok i actually saw it on that 7970 lighning unboxing video lol

I think what you seem to forget is that we are looking at binned chips with the lightning, so you are givin a much higher probability of recieving the best chips from a tray. So your argument definatly has merits, but as you will see, the lightning edition will allow more consistent high overclocks for everybody (air/water) and not end up with a dud that cant max out ccc. With reference cards, its a stright up lottery as to how good ur chip is, with this, you are assured atleast a decent oc.

The warranty is transferable since its serial # based and a waterblock can technically void the warranty since its suspose to be unaltered. If you change the DIP switches on the 580 Lightning it would also void the warranty
