GTX460 or 4870x2

post #1 of 10

I know there are fans of ATI and Nvidia.. personal preference aside, what card will be the strongest for WoW, Aion, BF3, Starwars TOR?
I have seen some benchmarks that puts the 4870x2 above a 560 and 6990. Thought? Pros and Cons?

Gear mentioned in this thread:

4870x2 is not faster than a 560 or 6990. My 4870s were outperformed by my 6950, which is on par with a 570. 4870x2 is probably between 550Ti and 560Ti in performance in most games, on average. A 460 1GB would probably be on par in most situations, faster in nVidia optimized games, have CUDA and PhysX, and consume about half the power.

This is a single card with 2 GPUs and 2GB RAM, 512bit. Not two single cards in Xfire..

the 4870x2 is stronger but very hot and will surely die from heat and power

the gtx460 is like 4870+30-50% more, like 1.5x4870, runs cooler, dx11, newer

Being a 4870X2 owner and playing BF3 and The Old Republic I can say that it does struggle some times. It really does in BF3 sometimes. TOR is really not a big deal but it can start to chug when out in the world and the landscape has a very far intense view.

Im trying to wait it out and see if Kepler drops the price on the current crop of cards for both nVidia and ATI before making a decision.

They are literally exactly the same as far as games are concerned. Two 4870 1GB cards = One 4870x2 2GB. The 4870x2 is just two RV770XT GPUs with a Crossfire bridge built in. Just like two 4870s are two RV770XT GPUs with a Crossfire bridge attached.

I'd say get the gtx 460 just because I saw you play WoW. As you may or may not know, the 4870x2 really isn't optimised in WoW. I used to play on my 4870x2 and would get barely 45 fps on ultra while my friend's gtx 460 (we had the exact same system at that time) would cap at the vsync (60fps) without any problems. With that said, I'd get the gtx 460 because it's better for and also because it supports dx11 and it's newer tech.

yeah and iirc running wow in dx11 actually saw a performance increase

WHAT?
HD6950=560GTX TI first at all
HD6970=570GTX

and 4870x2=480GTX

HD 6990 CANT be compared to that
post #10 of 10
Having owned both, for graphical performance there is no question the 4870x2 is where it is at. A gtx470 is about as fast as a 4870x2 and a 470 is much faster then a single 460 but uses more power, runs hotter and does not support dx11.
