need some overclocking advice q6600 G0 stepping

OK, so I have overclocked and am totally stable at 3.1GHz. ran prime 95 overnight and no crash. max temp of hottest core is around 62c.
settings:

c1e: disabled
speedstep: disabled
multiplier: 9x
vcore: auto (1.3125v according to core temp)
fsb: 360Mhz (359.99x9.0 in core temp)
Dram: 2.25v
ram timings: 4-4-4-12
DDR2-800 2.2V Patriot (2x2GB)

however, if i go any higher, a core crashes in prime 95, and if i go up to 3.4GHz or above, i BSOD with the error: a cpu core has stopped responding. or however it put it. and if I manually specify a voltage, the system wont boot at even 3GHz. i know im missing something here...

should I keep trying for 3.4 or 3.6, or should i back off at 3.2 due to temps? im a total newbie at overclocking... last thing i successfully overclocked (but killed shortly after due to overheating) was a voodoo5 5500.

62C is too high for 3.1 IMO. Get a decent cooler first thing.

Next, You're going to need to read up on 775 overclocking, then get your BIOS settings off "auto" and manually tune it. I'm guessing your crashing due to either not enough VCore or your memory is not set 1:1 with the FSB.

Do some research, then post up your BIOS settings.

the cooler i have on it is good sized... but looking closer, it looks like the previous owner didnt apply the thermal material right, as you can see it on the sides with the cooler on. so my next day off ill be taking off the cooler cleaning it up reapplying AS-5 and hopefully seeing a drop in temps.

as for the cooler on it.... 364

it looks like that, but with only support for ONE fan, not TWO. it is a Xigmatek fan on it, but dont know which model the cooler is.

about auto... thats the thing. i dont like the mobo controlling voltages, because i learned from my old asus m2n-sli that the mobo tends to overvolt, which i dont like... CPU-Z reports the voltage as being 1.325, so if i set it to a step higher in bios (1.350 or whatever) to compensate for vDroop, system will not boot. it will post, but freeze on the 7 loading screen.

as for lga775 overclocking guides, do you have any that you reccomend, or will any of the millions on google suffice?

Ok matched up the cooler on newegg and google. It's a xigmatek hdt s1283. So supposedly it's a great cooler. Gonna reapply arctic silver and will repost with temps with the as done correctly.

EEWW. Should I start an "epic fail" thread for thermal compound???

No WONDER my temps were high!!!

This should be fun..... *sigh*

NOTE: I wasn't the one who installed the cooler... I bought this system off Craigslist.... Preassembled in an armor jr case....switched cases cuz I didnt like the armor jr.

...some people shouldn't be allowed to build computers....

okay i again reached about 3.2GHz prime 95 stable. temps idle in the morning around 35c. (in san diego currently have weirdly warm temps) right now, idling around 42c on hottest core. reseated the heatsink, and the temps are : 40, 37,33,32. so not a huge gap like there was before. have not broke 60c. but... heres the thing.

if I go 3.2GHz or above (357x9) it will load into windows and all, but core 3 will fail in prime 95 within a minute or two. in core temp, the VID is 1.3125. bios, well, its almost 1.4v. here is my CPU-Z information.

402

here are my bios settings.

450
450
450
450

I know, Vanderpool is on, but since this is a hackintosh, I'd like to keep it on if at all possible... would vanderpool really screw with a core being a bum? or did i just get very unlucky q6600?

if it hasnt been noted, my mobo is an Asus P5K. (plain P5K)
