My Generic "Help with my first build" Thread!

Thread Starter
Hi there everyone at OC.net.

A couple of months ago, I started building my first machine, and I was wondering if anybody would be able to pass their judgement on it. I've gone a bit rogue and bought some stuff already though, hopefully nothing too disasterous has been done so far. The main purpose of this machine is to be primarily a gaming rig, with a small amount of 3D rendering and image editing whilst also sticking to a modest budget of around £700. Here is what I've already got...

Case - InWin Griffin

PSU - 600w Modular Power Station

Motherboard - ASUS M5A99X EVO

Graphics Card - GeForce 9800gt 1gb (donated by a friend, and will be upgraded shortly after the computer's completion)

Thats all I have so far, besides Mouse, Keyboard, Monitor, etc. Here is what I'm planning on buying; (sorry, it's all in British £££'s)

CPU - Undecided. Either a Bulldozer, or Phenom II x4 975 @ 3.6ghz (currently on Amazon UK for £132.50) See Below

HDD - Seagate Barracuda Green 2tb, SATA 6gbps, 64mb buffer, 5900rpm (£87.80) - also going to try and transfer my old one, not checked if compatible yet

RAM - Corsair 8gb Kit 1600mhz, - 2 x 4gb modules (£40.20)

OS - Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit

Graphics Card - GeForce GTX 560ti 1gb - to replace the above when I get enough money (£166.97)

That's that, I don't think I've missed anything, if I have, I'm sure someone will notice!

Now, my problem regarding the CPU is thus. I've read on a couple of reviews that the Bulldozers are not compatible with some older builds of motherboards without a BIOS update, including the M5A99X EVO, despite listing it as AM3+ ready. A couple of people have stated that it isn't possible to do this BIOS update without an AM3 processor, but as I'm on a budget, I don't fancy buying another processor just to get the one I want to work - I may as well buy a decent processor that I know works, and the Phenom II listed above is the one I like the look of most. Having looked at my motherboard, there is a sticker with '0705' printed on it, whereas ASUS' website states that the FX series need BIOS version 0813 installed. Am I to therefore assume that my BIOS will not support the Bulldozers?

This brings me to something else I've found out today. I don't know if it's true or not, but a review I did read said that a negative point of my motherboard was that it "Depends on Bulldozer". Can anybody elaborate on what that might mean? Here is the link - Click Here.

I'd be very grateful if anybody could give me some advice about the CPU issue I'm having. I'd like to plunge for a 4100/4170 or a 6100, but not if it won't work! Also be grateful if anybody could give me any thoughts on the rest of the build.

Many thanks :-)

ok your boards bioss verssion is for Phoenom II you will need to update it to acsepted the FX cpu'sbecase the motherboards came out befor the FX cpu's did they set the bioss to use the AM2+ and AM3 cpus the new FX cpu's arint a bad cpu but they in no way lived up to all the hype and at stock settings some of them underperforme the Phoenom II cpu's I would recomend eather a Phoenom II x4 960T that alot of them do unlock to a 6 core but its not a fact that it will some do and some dont. or a 1090T or a 1100 stright 6 core with your graphic's card choceses its a well balanced setup the only other point you can improve your computer is to load Windows on a ssd drive of about 60 gig

the 1090T or the 1100 you will have to pickup off Amazon or Ebay

hello, fx-8120 from ebuyer at £150 and get £20 back=£130 for 8 core cpu.the cpu ran out of box with bios,i did update ,but it runs with out it.i would also get either the 7770 combo or the largest gpu you can afford.
iam personnaly getting 1866mhz ram, timing are cl9 which is found on 1333 and 1600 so it likes it anywhere in that range. its also 1866 x2 = 3732 with a 3800 cpu.
Tarun, iam liking your shopping aid,its good work your doing.truckerguy liking the help also.

p.s i think the rebate from amd is ending in next couple of day, check it out first.
