[CNet] Next iPad will be the iPad HD, not the iPad 3 - Page 5

When you are looking around, do you see a hazy wave around everything? Does it shimmer in a aluminium plated shine?

Seriously. How many Windows 8 tablets have you held? Hmm, let me wager that being between 0 and 0. Somewhere smack in the middle of those numbers. Hmm, is it.... none? Yes. It's none. You've never held or used a market released Windows 8 tablet.

Yet, incredibly, you somehow find that Windows 8, with it's disgusting, ugly Metro UI designed around tablets, won't actually be able to compete with an anchored, gimped operating system that's locked down tighter than a nunnery on heat? Despite never having even used one! Amazing.

Yet most people would find that since Windows 8 is a full on operating system with very few limitations as to what programs you can use (those only being the hardware and the optimisation for such, I.E. ARM instruction sets) that it'd, for lack of better works, urinate all over iOS.

I count myself as one of those people. I think that a full operating system that I'm entirely in control over that has a fantastic grounding (it's basically Windows 7 with advanced touch and an ugly UI) over the iOS operating system (limited and gimped. There is no full operating system in the sense that Windows or OSX are).

Also, what authority do you have on Windows 8? What educated you about it's battery life, etc etc? Being that it's not been released fully, let alone nor has a tablet running it been released for sale and/or review?

I would have guessed that it would be the Ipad RD for retina display. HD doesn't sound catchy enough.

I don't care about how well or how badly the iPad will do, the only thing that has ever annoyed me is when i'm walking around Pompeii and I see people taking photos with an iPad instead of a camera. No matter how many times you see it happen, no matter whay they do to the iPad, it will always look ridiculous.

Seen that here in Seville. It is ridiculous.

Also steelborn is in denial. He cannot believe his company would do something so... different from what they have been doing these past years.

Windows 8 is getting bashed when it's a complete overhaul of thier OS and so much time/effort/resources has gone into it.

Then we have Apple who re-sell the same thing over and over again.

All Apple do is milk. Atleast Microsft look after and feed the cow first.

iPad HD... doesn't ring like an Apple product to me. Needs better "magical" descriptions. biggrin.gif

And regarding Windows 8: let's just see what happens when a W8 slate goes against iOS and Android counterparts. We'll see which has the best balance of efficiency, performance and usability out of the three.

You're right, I've held none. Just like everyone else in this thread, including you, or am I mistaken? Your point is moot, and somewhat hypocritical, considering you believe it'll be significantly better than an iPad, yet you've not used one either.

I like how you isolate iOS when I clearly addressed both iOS and Android, and yes, Windows 8 will be competition to neither, but if any, the latter because it's Android users who seek that kind of full functionality that Windows 8 will offer, not iOS users.

Any Windows 8 slate being powered by an Intel processor will underperform, and it will be more difficult to use with standard apps, as well as having short battery life and costing more than an iPad or Prime. With ARM however, well, that's quite new so I'll have to wait and see if they're able to get decent performance out of it so you get a snappy experience like on iOS or Android, and so that it doesn't take too long to open applications and so on, but I'll guarantee you that it won't ever get the kind of battery life you get with the iPad 2 or the Prime, unless they use a really large battery at the cost of more weight -- and even then it's unlikely.

That aside, by using Windows 8 on an ARM powered slate, you lose the one positive that Windows 8 has going for it, and that's the ability to download any app online and use it, even though they lack the appropriate UI for a slate, it allows for functionality that iOS and Android can't match right now. It's both a positive and a negative.

In denial? Ha. This goes against everything Apple normally does, so why would anyone believe it? It will be called iPad 3, mark my words.

How does Apple re-sell the same thing over and over again? The iPad 2 was a significant improvement over the iPad 1, and the iPad 3 will too be a significant over the iPad 2.

Wouldn't surprise me at all, "HD" is *the* go-to marketing buzzword of this year, and a couple of years before it.

So they couldn't use the same kind of battery the iPad does, then? And whilst I may not have handled a Windows 8 tablet, I've used the OS. It's basically Windows 7 with Metro slapped on the top layer (as many others have said). Whilst everything is up in the air (how touch input will perform, as you said, how ARM and Windows work together) you can't say with the conviction you did that it won't be a competitor to the iPad or an Android tablet and it'll perform worse! You have no evidence for it at the moment. Which is where I took up because you were matter of factly.
