Video Rendering CPU & Ram?

Notice: Please for once I don't want any 100% references to a "gaming computer", I have asked questions like this before and I always get "gaming frame rate would be..." Types of answers. If you post would you please regard this as a video rendering Rig 1st THEN any insight on gamin framerate, cons/pros, etc. is gladly welcome/encouraged: Thank you!*

So anytime I ask about the i7-2600(or 2700)k processor I always hear great things and I think i'm going to get one of them. However, I hear great things in terms of Framerate and gaming stuff. My GPU is a 7970 BTW so I know it can run any game on ultra w/ enhancements mods just fine with an i7-2600k. But never on the Video Rendering side.

How does it preform for rendering Hd videos?
Would it be good for say a 5 minute 1080p Hd video on After Effects? or take like 2 hours?
How much better would it be if I had a 3930k? since it's six cores instead of 4? <-- important.

Also how much Ram should I get for video rendering? I was planning on getting 8 but I hear people needing 16 or more? The 8 is the DDR-1866 or whatever not 1600, or 1366 whatever. I might go 16Gb of DDR3-1600 I think it's called. Still new to computer stuff.

Please help, I'm trying to work around my $2050 budget including monitor, case, and everything and just balance everything accordingly.

*Also just heard about Adobe's GPU incorporation/Acceleration and how Nvidia cards help video's render about 30x faster by using the GPU or something. But is it only with Nvidia cards? I dunno if this part is even making any sense but any insight would be nice. I think I still want my 7970 i'm planning on buying since it's more powerful then it's Nvidia counterpart @ the same price. (GTX 580)

Thanks!

This is like the 20th computer forum website i've been to with no luck or good answers. Hope this one has some cool computer ppl to help me out smile.gif

If you are looking for the best possible video rendering computer you'd want the 3930K (the additional 4 threads will help tremendously in rendering), as much memory as you can put on the board, and (assuming you are using only Adobe software) an Nvidia GPU (only Nvidia GPUs get the speed benefit at the moment).

In terms of cost/benefit for rendering, I can't give you a more specific answer, because I haven't used these specific components for much video rendering. However, the basic concepts still hold. In rendering, you want as many cores, threads, and memory as possible.

Do you think I would do ok if I used a 7970 instead? I know it can't incorporate it. But would it slow it down that much if used that GPU? Just saying, this is where my gaming side comes in and I want a great graphics card and the 7970 is better for the price.

Have you read about the Mercury Playback Engine from Nvidia? Its a specific enhancement for Adobe products when using their certified cards to take on tasks like video rendering and animation.

No I have not! Should I go for a Nvidia GTX 580 or whatever instead. It's just I'm trying to do video rendering & be able to run Skyrim w/ ultra texture enhancements/mods on 1 card.

I mean, it really comes down to what your priorities are:

How important is gaming to you? How important is video rendering? I don't think the increase will be on the order of 30x improvement, but it could be substantial (I'm not knowledgeable enough to give you firm number.)

If it were me, I'd go with the 7970 and game away. But on the rare occasion I need to do rendering, I just let my computer run overnight and read a book, so it's not that great of a loss to me. You might feel different if you need to do it more often.

I prefer ATI cards..but for your application..Nvidia is the way to go.CAD,rendering..engineering and Adobe stuff=Nvidia

Umm.. the Mercury Engine is only used in Premiere Pro.. After Effects doesn't use CUDA acceleration (I think anyways)

The GTX580 is a great card for both gaming and video rendering.

Its on the list for compatible cards for the Mercury Engine: This is only if you are rendering in Premiere Pro C5.5

Thanks for your advice everybody! Helped a lot. I'm probably going to go with a 7970, cause honestly I render in After Effects or Sony Vegas more than anything but my primary focus is Gaming and Game Designing. I'm probably going with a 3930k, 16Gb DDR3-1600 Ram (Corsair Vengance) and Overclock it a good bit. So I think with a 7970, 3930k, 16GbRam, and Overclocked, my rendering time should be better than most for sure. Also I was buying things easily upgraded over something that can't be replaced as easily (i.e my CPU choice) so this helped me with my decision.

Thanks! Feel free to keep posting if you want smile.gif This website is much better on people who know what their talking about and replying fast and accurate.
Have a great week...
