What's the fastest GPU an overclocked Q6600 @ 3.3ghz will take before bottlenecking? Got any benchies for proof?

So I have a Q6600 overclocked to 3.3ghz right now....the most I could get out of it. I mainly play BF3, but would also like to play World in Conflict, GTA 4, Metro 2033, Assassins Creeds, and other games with some higher frame rates. Surprisingly in BF3 none of the cores are maxed out.

What I am wondering is what is the fastest GPU that I can get before bottlenecking becomes an issue? I do not plan to upgrade to a 2500k anytime soon! Would be nice to see some benchies as proof. I know alot of people are going to say nothing more then a 560ti....but how do you know that?

We don't it's just speculation. My friend has a Phenom ii x4 @ 3.5 ghz with a 6950 and he claims it doesn't bottleneck, so I'd say start from there.thumb.gif

Yea. I'm actually in no hurry to upgrade as I don't have money. I would like to know how far I could go when the time comes though. What made me think of this is on another forum some guy was debating if he should buy a 7970 with a Q6600. I know that will be bottlenecked, but curious as to where it starts

Surprisingly in BF3 @ 1080P I get around 40-43FPS on average in 64player maps with a low of 30 and a high of in the 60s. All settings on High, medium deferred AA, SSAO, and no MSAA or motion blur.

I'm sure there is still alot of people rocking overclocked Q6600s and can't believe I can't find any becnhmarks:o

single card is hard to bottleneck a good overclocked quad core as a 955 can power a single 7970 before it bottlenecks , it's when multiple cards is utilized when things becoming the bottleneck issue. the 560TI/6950 area is when Phenom II's bottleneck starts in SLI/CFX modes now since this is a q6600 it may start to go bottlenecking at a 570gtx SLI atleast when its noticable.

i think i got the last part correct, i know the first part is aswell the Phenom II 560ti/6950 SLI/CFX part is correct on several cases not all, tho the x6 core CPU's can power a 6950 CFX and 560ti SLI before bottlenecks happen.

Hard to say, but I can tell you I had a Q9650 at 3.5ghz with a 5850, jumping to my i5 2500k made a huge difference in fps, even at stock 3.3ghz.

Forgot to mention this would be a single card solution. I don't have a SLi or Xfire mobo and it looks as if the verdict on that is 560ti/6950 x2. I wonder if I would benefit more from a jump to a I5 2500k overclocked to 4ghz with my current GTX 275 FTW Edition or a new card? In the past a faster video card was always a better upgrade for gaming and I figured this would be the same since the Q6600 is at respectable clocks?

It's really hard to say. I just did the math from anandtech bench...

2500k at stock speeds gets on average 40% more fps than the Q6600 on the games they tested.

560ti gets 46% more fps than a GTX 285 on the games they tested.

I'm thinking a GPU would be the bigger upgrade for straight FPS, but the 2500k will be better for the system all around.

I'm interested in this topic too as my cpu stubbornly won't stay stable at a higher overclock ....
now it is AMD athlon II x4 635 running at 3.25ghz with 2600 nb , gets 3.65 points in cinebench
stock was 2.9ghz with 2000 nb

I plan on getting a new gpu around 7850 performance.

From what I have observed in task manager, bf3 all low consume around 75% overall cpu with the first core running at 90% ultilization , a little risky of running into bottleneck.

you will want to know the entire CPU usage % not just a single core and what GPU do you have?
