DIMM vs SODIMM?

Thread Starter
Given how desktop CPUs and chipsets have been able to use SODIMMs for a long time now *looks over at the hexcore Gulftown laptops* and there's very little price or performance difference between the 2 sizes, is there any good reason why desktop mobos still use DIMMs instead of SODIMMs?

You'd think the board space savings alone would be enough to convince mobo makers to switch, especially on platforms like X79 where the CPU socket + DIMMs cover half the board rolleyes.gif

To put it simply: When was the last time you saw 4x4GB 2400 9-11-10-28 DDR3 SO-DIMM? Or a SO-DIMM with a heatsink worth anything?

2x4GB 1866 10-10-10-30 SO-DIMM: $100
2x4GB 1866 8-9-9-26 DIMM: $75
(well there goes both price and performance differences)

Not to mention 8GB sticks, and higher then 1866. Or trying to OC SO-DIMM, has anyone even tried that?

Arent the SO-DIMM's usually plugged in flat against surface ? So they would kinda take more space that way on a mobo. Other than that I think the major reason why we are using 240 pin on desktops is tradition smile.gif And the same socket can take registered + ECC sticks if you are using server grade stuff wink.gif
