As far as manufacturer, lots of people swear by WD, and I haven't had one that has failed yet. So, I would look around at WD models.

It seems like in the Hard Drive arena everyone has had different experiences with different brands. Personally I have had two Seagates fail on me, (both were 160gb 7200.9s) but then again I have a 20GB and an 80GB that have been ticking for at least 4 years. IMO though Western Digital seems to be pretty good price, performance and reliability wise. So I think It'd be good idea to give them a try.

I have 3 WDs in my house and all of them are running perfectly. Seagate and WD tends to be the most popular and most reliable. Maxtors HDs are the ones you should be worried about, alot of people have their Maxtors fail and I have personally witnessed a 40GB Maxtor fail in my friend's PC.

I only buy WDs because none of mine have failed me. I have heard that WDs are very sensive to shock and electrial-static, so I dunno how well their mybook drives are.

I have Maxtor, Hitachi, Seagate, Western Digital and Samsung, yet none of those brands have ever failed me. I will say thoug, I dropped the WD and some piece came off so I RMA'd it and got a new one but other than that?

And yes, I've had IBM HDDs too but that was the infamous Desktar which had a failure rate of 2 out of 3 and in all cases I ended up with one that eventually broke.............therefore stay away from IBM products.

Right now, I'm very satisfied with my Seagates, perpendicular recording and 16MB cache along with a 5 yeard warranty? It's a sweet deal for the price I paid.
