it was probably used to show a persons character as evidence

not in any other way

and anything could be used in that sense in court if the judge deems it legal

and in court you want the whole truth because that person might face prison .. so if it helps them why not if it shows guilt why not.. but for a job interview i think its pure bs still

This'll go to court. And be considered "wrong" unless a good line of reasoning is applied for it. As in some job needs a security background check. But then it will be abused and it will have to be finely pulled apart an gone over. I'm sure companies will then have to have a license to do this in the end.

Instead of telling them "I don't have a facebook account" or "I deleted my account", I'd tell them straight up "You can walk on down to kiss my butt blvd, cause that's none of your bui'ness.

Looking at my page? Fine.

Demanding my passwords: Not ok.

Admittedly, I haven't read the entire thread, but couldn't this be getting close to violating 4th amendment rights?

There's certain stuff that are relevant, such as age, address, previous experience and references and education. That's all you need for a job. They do not need your Facebook information and, again, they have no rights to ask for it and in doing so IS an invasion into someones privacy. Just try this: ask a random person for their facebook account information. That indignation they display? Yeah, that's you hurting their right to privacy and their being pissed at that.
Also, if more people stood up for themselves and spoke out against this it'd soon go away. If a company needs to know what kind of a person you are, then they have your references. If you don't have any references... welcome to your first time trying to get employed.

Agree with the first sentence.

On the second one, the big red flag is the age. Not allowed to ask that. Ever. Can you tell age from the rest of the resume? Almost always. Still cannot ask.

Merely asking for your facebook password is not a violation of your privacy and they have just as much right to ask for it as they do any other (legal for now) question. A privacy violation implies that something was taken without your knowledge or approval. You always have the right to say no.

I do see laws being passed in the future that deal with this issue. I think there is one country already that has passed laws prohibiting companies from using any social media information to deny employment. Finland maybe?

Funny, when my SO applied for her latest teaching job her potential (and now current) school pretty much insisted she have no Facebook page at all and if she did to keep it private and never allow students as friends (or parents either for that matter).

I think that's reasonable to suggest/request of instructors. If I were a teacher I would absolutely not make my profile public--for many reasons.

^ Yeah I have a couple of my old teachers on my FB and my course leader at uni too, all of them are strictly not allowed to add current students (my course leader has two, one clearly marked with our uni name)

Same, I find this just to be ridiculous. How can you base somebody on their professional level by their personal level? I'll just make a facebook where I talk to fake friends about genital itches all the time.
