What if someone does not have a facebook account? I wouldn't want to be denied a job because I do not have one.

If I am ever asked to give my Facebook or email information to a potential employer, I will simply say "While I have nothing to hide, if you need that, then this interview is over." After that is done, I will immediately come home and delete my facebook account. I refuse to let corporate America dictate what is and is not permissible in my private life. I have a squeaky clean criminal record, my finger prints are on file (the price of becoming an educator), and I have a state certificate. If this is not enough proof that I am a law abiding citizen with good intentions for my life, then frankly, I don't want to work for them.

That's my 2 cents about the situation. I will not bend over and let them invade my privacy. No way.

How is this even legal? If this becomes a norm, I would just change the e-mail and name on my account before applying for a job and they won't even know I have one. Sorry, you can't be forced to provide your password to ANYONE, not even law enforcement unless you are withholding evidence/obstructing justice to protect someone other than yourself.

No, it doesn't sound legal. But it does sound like the sort of thing employers would try to do until a big enough stink was made about it. And what are you going to do if they ask, you say no, and they say "ok, thanks for coming in, we'll get back to you." And then never get back to you. Kinda hard to prove they didn't hire you because of this and did hire the dude who forked over the info. Any time there's uncertainty in the job market the employers start to get all uppity.

I have a separate facebook account attached with my professional e-mail in the event of something like this. Good thing being cautious is paying off. My personal facebook is on my person e-mail address and has never had my full name linked to the account. That's not to say they won't find it, but they will have to look other places for them to make the connections.

Being cautious would be not having a Facebook account at all.

Maybe Facebook will end up creating some sort of "Employer password" option on everyone's account. You give that employer password and they would be able to look through some content in your profile but not all of it and they can't make changes to anything. Even then this is sort of invasive. It's one thing to look at the content on your wall and it's a totally different thing to demand full access to your account with the ability to view your private messages and other content that you have set as private for a reason.

Yup. All in all, that's the Internet. If you don't want something to be public or stored in some way that makes it accessible by others, you shouldn't key it in or upload it at all to begin with. I've thought about killing off my Facebook account plenty of times, but I have lots of friends on there and I would probably never talk to them outside of Facebook with what little time I have in my busy life.

Agreed - but you don't get to dictate how people perceive you, and you may not have the luxury of just turning down jobs that don't fit your philosophy. You can romanticize the encounter all you want, but when you are sitting in an interview, week 12 out of work, you may think differently if all your prospective employers are asking the same thing. The sad truth is that the world is not utopian, understanding or facilitating. You need to minimize the potential for people to categorize and misunderstand you. At this point in history, that means not publicizing your binge drinking, etc.

I'm not saying don't drink and have fun, I'm saying don't put it online into a system that is essentially a loose resume of your character.

I believe they would need a warrant still. A police officer can not harass you for your password.

Doubtful. Facebook is very against giving away your personal info.
