No company has the right to request this information. My Facebook page is private and it's that way for a reason. It's my page between my friends and I quite simply wouldn't entertain any company that would ask for this information. It's a breach of privacy and they have no rights to do that.

There are criminal records checks and sex register checks which I'm fine with. Those are all they need. If they want to know about me then they can search me on Google and comb through the thousands of people with my name and get all the information I've personally and purposely left public. Anything I've deemed private is exactly that.

If celebrities are entitled to injunctions to protect their privacy then I'm entitled to protect mine. You wouldn't see a movie studio asking for an actors facebook details, or the CEO of ActivisionBlizzard being asked for his Facebook details when he moves back to running a food company. So what's different here?

Nothing. We're all people and we all have the human right to privacy and freedom from harassment. We also have the right to not apply or take these jobs, sure, but these companies shouldn't be able to legally ask for that information. It's about time the government protected our rights and stopped them from being able to ask for personal and private information. Otherwise it's going to get to the point that companies will require cameras and microphones in your house to track everything you do and monitor everything you say. It's the exact same thing.

I doubt this would pass legal examination.

Cause if you are the type to leak company secrets via facebook then that is a problem. If you are the type to bad mouth everything your company does, then it's a problem. That is not to say there is anything wrong with whining. But if every other post you do is nothing but complaints, there is a good (not 100%) chance that that is how your work ethic is.

Do you then get to see your bosses page to make sure he isn't bad mouthing you? Of course not. But under these pretenses, you should have that right.

I can see companies wanting to make the best decision possible as its easier to not hire the person than the fire them but this is a little much. Your personal life is no business of the company you work for unless it is affecting your performance at work.

My company takes your personal life very seriously. They are very good at making sure you have time to take care of things but never ask what its for unless it starts to seem like your abusing the system. When I interviewed they never asked anything personal other than things that pertained to the job. They did do a background check, both US based and international but they are a multi-national insurance company so thats normal.

I will be asking our General Council what she thinks of this practice...
