[El Reg] Workers can't escape Windows 8 Metro - Microsoft COO - Page 9

Why don't they just include two options during the Windows installation to choose Classic or New ( onto the same DVD? )
You can use the other if you reinstall? That way, people to pick between the two instead.

Task bar for each screen? Then im pretty sure its no different then having a bunch of icons at the bottom that tell you what you have on. In that case the ipod touch can multitask too since it has a list of apps running in the backgroun which you can resume. Theres a difference between beeing able to run a bunch of programs in the bakcground but not being able to see them until you either select them or alttab to them apposed to being able to see all your programs in one go without having to unnessecarily switch everytime to a new window.

I have only had to use Mac's back in high school, which were the old PowerPC ones, and it was easier to use than Windows 8 ever will be. Having to get aftermarket software to keep current functionality is just a band aid. New OS's are supposed to add functionality, not take it away, and that's what I feel like is happening this time around. Windows Vista and 7 brought a stable platform which could utilize more than the 3.25GB that I could get XP to see, and added the search bar which I love, on top of not degrading in performance over time as XP did. I don't want to slide to unlock my workstation, and especially not a laptop. This might be the time to buy some Apple stock when more people buy the low end MBP's since laptops are replacing many consumer's desktops in favor of portability.

Edit: I'm going to try Server 8 since I do like 2008 R2, maybe the only thing good about the new platform.

I don't see why everyone is writing off Windows 8 simply because of the MetroUI, which is actually usable on a desktop environment. No functionality has been removed, the MetroUI layer was simply added on top.

The closest thing to loss in functionality is that the start button is gone, but hitting the Windows key still brings up a fully functional full screen start menu, and if you're looking for something on the start menu, you aren't focusing on a program so the full screen start menu doesn't actually take anything away at all.

Windows 8 also brings tons of new features to the table, I've listed them time and time again, and consumer Preview added even more. Multiple task bars, better multi-screen support, native ISO mounting are just some of the key features I've grown to depend on in the last months and hate switching back to my Windows 7 Laptop for work.

As for slide to unlock, hit space bar, that is the same as sliding up the screen using the mouse cursor. One key press is all it takes, same with the MetroUI, by default, there is a 2-tile wide icon that is a link to your desktop.

I meant task bar when you're in desktop mode, not in the Metro UI. The normal Windows taskbar is duplicated on each screen, so at the bottom of each screen you can see what you have running and switch to it.

As for multi-tasking in strictly the MetroUI with apps from the app-store, swiping across the left or right edges can switch apps and they will all run in the background.

Example:
- load email program
- click on a big email
- switch to IE
- click a link
- pinch IE to the right 1/4 of the screen
- read email while watching the page load in the mini-IE

Here’s a fun one. Fire up Windows Explorer and navigate over to your Windows directory. Do a search for “shows desktop,” and copy the shortcut that you find into the following location: C:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Startup. By doing so, you’ll ensure that Windows 8 always boots to the “Classic Desktop” instead of its Metro UI.

You'll still have to use it for at least the start menu, but at least you dont have to boot into it.

This of course does not affect desktop programs and applications, these still act as they always did.
Multi-tasking is easier in Windows 8 because by default it gives you a taskbar on each screen, Aero snap works a little better now too. Multi-screen setups are also a little easier to manage with Windows 8.

No problem, just want to make sure that people have the right info before they make their decisions, seems the smallest little thing gets way more attention then all the great things...

Microsoft has forgotten that the Operating System is suppose to be a utility, a workbench!

Everybody has now forgotten about how easily one could manage their files in Windows98...! Make a folder on your desktop and no matter where u put that folder (like a workbench in your garage) that folder stayed there. No only that, but ANYTHING you put in that folder also stayed exactly where you put it within that folder. There was no auto-arrange, no grid..

I place icons (programs) in clusters within my folders, because OBJECT orientated is the fundamental aspect of a workbench.

Now... this Windows * is like Microsoft is trying to shove an appliance down our throats, instead of a workbench (working environment) in which we can tailor our own environment.

Metro UI is kewl, (for those who need cruise-control), but lets not insult those who've been using MS-DOS for 30 years... ok?
