PXE Deployment for dummies

Hi all,

I want to figure out how to install an image on multiple computers at once...

I am aware of what pxe is and the general idea of how it works but thats as far as it goes... although if i did know (contrary to my thread title), i have the savvy to be able to manage/implement myself etc etc (so not asking for any hand holding)

does anyone have any knowledge of the best/easiest way to do something like this....

I would highly appreciate anyones suggestions.

Pxe is way to to effectively boot to network.. Will need a router to give out IP's to DHCP addresses, need a server/computer with the network driver for the devices and then the image you want to push.

RIS server works, Altiris, Ghost...

If you manually did 1 by 1, depending on hardware of course, you could probably drop a ghost image off thumb drive in 15 mins per device.

* configure your DHCP server
* install syslinux and add pxelinux.0 into the dhcp configuration file
* setup a nfs share, ftp or http and put all your extracted image there
* put all the kernels and initrds into separate place
* edit pxelinux.cfg/default file and put the kernel and initrd dirs there with the image dirs
* restart dhcp, nfsd and mountd and your good to go

thanks for the replies firstly..

just for the record i know what pxe is/does and why i want to use etc (dont take the wrong way, just letting you know so i dont have replies saying "pxe is used to deploy an iso simultaneously to a number of machines at the same time etc etc" or words to that effect)

so is there a standard way to do this or the most popular best way to do this... is there any microsoft standard programs etc used to do this... what are there names? which operating system do i use for the "Boot server"

i have been reading around on the net and came across something called "Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager 2007" what is this... is this relevant... is this even in the realm of what i want for a simple deployment plan i.e

BOOT SERVER (contains OS, necessary managers etc, ISO's) network> target PC's ....

do i have to use things like Ghost etc... ar ethere not microsoft standard programs (OS embedded type things) that do any of this?

If you want to use kinda like ghost stuff try using ghost4linux extract the contents and put it to yout PXE root. I used this method
last time in my old company to image 5 workstation machines at a time.


Also, if you want to PXE with windows image you may want to look and do a research about WINPE.
