With some additional volts on CPU-NB and RAM, however, these modules behave a bit more reasonably. Atm it seems that twice the RAM amount cost me approx 85 MHz in CPU OC and about 80 MHz in NB OC with stable values of approx 3.92 GHz for CPU and 2.8 GHz for HT link. A sacrifice I'm willing to do as the extra 16 Gb of RAM will do for me more than 85 MHz of CPU speed under my usage patterns smile.gif

High density DIMMs often need loose sub-timings themselves, and most memory controllers are even more picky, especially with two DIMMs per channel. You results actually look pretty good for that amount of memory on that platform.

You are running 2.8GHz HT link, or 2.8GHz CPU-NB? The former is excessive and pointless.

In a more serious note for your average user 8 Gb is enough atm. Then you have those strange perverts that can actually use 16+ GB of RAM and I'm one of them. Its not exactly mainstream usage pattern, I must admit, but for me it is actually useful. TBH if x79 platform would be cheaper I would be all over it by now as I can use as much of RAM as you can throw at me at affordable price. Even 256 Gb would mean for me that I can do more accurate simulations if I could afford it.

I was doing computations few weeks ago for a conference in Austria (after finding out a little while before that I had missed one line in parameter phase space by a little margin) and its really irritating if stuff crashes when you leave it on overnight when you are already starving for time bcos your stuff ran out of memory. Sure, I could solve the problem by optimizing the code better but with the RAM price as it is atm it seems to me this problem is solved cheaper by throwing hardware at it.

Atomfix and others saying this cant work because the board only lists support for 16gb ram.....clearly you speaking from an uninformed, inexperienced point of view.

1. board makers list max ram a board can support based on what ram can be found and tested when the boards in development, rarely they will double that if higher capacity modules are about to come out.

2. board makers rarely if ever test and update based on new ram modules that come out, because they put out replacements for boards pretty regularly, why test the 700 series board or 800 series boards you dont make anymore with new ram, when you could just tell the person to get a 900 series board?

3. any tech whos spent years doing upgrades and repairs can likely tell you, that its VERY common to be able to put memory modules 2-4x the capacity listed by the manufacturer into boards without any issues, infact, I have a duron 600@866 next to me that lists 384mb as its max ram, its for 1.5gb in it.....(pc133 stuff) and before that it had 768mb ram......

I also have 3 laptops around that have 2+x the ram their manufactures say they support(in the case of one model, the maker actually added a foot note that the ram I used has been reported to work....after i reported it)...

I personally would try it and see if it works, worst case, you have to return some ram or resell it, also note, you likely will need to set your timings manually, IF any are missing from your bios list, go to the main bios screen and hit ctrl+f1, this will unhide any hidden options/settings you may need to tweak.

also, you WILL need to back out to 2t for command rate and very likely will have to drop back to 9 timings from my experiance with 1055t's, you may get lucky, a friend of mine got a true golden chip, the things running his ram at over 2300 with 8 timings(4x4gb stuff) and 1t, but, even he admits, he just got REALLY lucky.....(hes at 4.2 on air for gods sake and he let p95 run for a week using 8gb ram...)

my chips more touchy even on a much newer board(sabertooth 990fx, was on a gb 790xt-ud4p...miss the award bios!!!) I can testify that my friends 790xt-ud4p can take 32gb ram, it was slow stuff(1333) but it worked, it can even take ES 16gb modeules(double high bests) for 64gb, BUT you MUST set perfect timings and that stuff wouldnt oc by even 5mhz without errors..... those modules where ECC or FB or something like that tho.....not even supported by the board according to the book....

Im betting the OP can get 32gb ram working without to much effort....but im also betting it could hamper his OC a bit or at least ram oc.... should be fun tho.....

Wait .. I can actually use 16 GB modules on1055T? I mean ECC or RDIMM's? I tought 1055T dont support either although I must admit I have not tried. Granted I just spent 150 euros on getting 32 GB and just moving on straight away would be a bit .. wasteful. But I guess I should keep an eye on eBay and see if I can get some even higher density module used and see if I can get it work with my particular board as well.

As far as getting this thing to work then yeah - it was a bit shaky on SPD settings and at stock for CPU - apparently needed some additional CPU-NB volts. Cost me ~80 MHz in OC as well but I got the DIMM's working at 1492 MHz at 9-9-9-27-33-1T which, while not being very awesome, is decent enough for me. I'm after memory size anyway over the tight timings as that's whats floating my boat under my usage patterns.

Thuban CPU's Both memory controllers are 72 bit (64bit for data transfer + 8 bit for error correction). That is why those ECC modules ran flawlessly. I think ECC memories do not only rely on the board but the BIOS and socket also. I wanted to know this since I bought this CPU, you made it confirmed. Thanks thumb.gif
