Fan On 6970 Going Beserk Randomly

Hey guys,

Got a problem with one of my Sapphire 6970's, basically, one of the cards decides to ramp up the fan to extreme levels randomly during gaming, example:

As you can see Afterburner is reading the fan at 25, yet it shows the fan rpm being over 5000, not as if the temps are blazing high or anything, things i have tried so far:

Controlling fan speed manually via Afterburner/CCC (does not work, at all)
Gone back to older drivers (driver sweeper etc)
Uninstalling Afterburner and then re-installing drivers and letting the default fan profile do it's work
Unseating the graphics cards and putting them back in, tried them in different positions also

Even after swapping the cards around on the motherboard it is the same card causing the issue it seems, so i'm close to RMA'ing it but just wanted to know if anyone had ran across a similar issue and if so if there's any other solution smile.gif The ONLY way to calm the fan down is to do a cold reboot i.e. unplug everything, wait a few seconds and then plug it back in, a normal reboot does not even work.

Anyone?? smile.gif

Hmmm. Well I do know that AMD cards have some sort of on-board protection. In the event the card starts getting a little too toasty, it'll ramp up the fan to 100% for a few seconds then slow back down to whatever normal speed is. For example, my 4870's do this if I'm fiddling with my mobo BIOS, because the fans spin at about 15% if they're not being controlled by any driver, so every minute or so they'll scream for about 2 seconds then wind back down.

Considering this, it's possible whatever sensor the card uses to control that feature might be damaged in some way. Either it's reading temperatures wrong or has just gone nuts. If the card is under warranty just RMA it.
