Can overclocking CPU cause RAM to go bad?

Hi all, new here. I recently built a rig as follows:

Motherboard: Asrock z68 professional Fatality

CPU: i5 2500k

Memory: 16 gb cosair vengeance low profile (to fit under the noctua cooler for the cpu)

PSU: corsair HX 1050

GPU: 2x gigabyte windforce 7950's

Storage: 2x corsair force 3 120 gb's in raid for OS and apps, 1.5 tb seagate green for other storage

Case: corsair carbide 400r

cpu cooler: Noctua nh-d14

OS: windows 7 64 bit

I overclocked the cpu to 4.5 ghz with an offset of +.200 and didn't touch any other settings including the ram. It ran fine for a while but my ram started to go bad as I was getting multiple freezes, BSOD's, and tons of errors in memtest. I've gone through two sets of ram now. Can my overclocking settings be causing this or is this just a hardware failure (motherboard or PSU?) Thanks

Not sure but isnt with the i5-2500 when you overclock you raise your blck. increasing your ram frequency, Therefore you need to increase the voltage of your ram to compensate or lower the multiplier of your ram close to something that is stock?

How are you overclocking? Multiplier or BLCK? If you are using multiplier, that "shouldn't" be hurting your ram. I've heard of blck overclocking killing hard drives, but not ram. Does your ram have XMP profiles and are they being used (even if you didn't tell it to use it)? Did you get your ram as a 16GB kit or 2 8GB kits (learned not too long ago that this matters)? Is the vengeance ram the only type you've tried (as this is your 2nd - 3rd set)?

You got me there. I am totally new to overclocking, the ram has a stock timing of 9-9-9-24 and is clocked at 1600 mhz. All the overclocking guides that I read said nothing about changing the ram settings unless you wanted to overclock it as well.

Well that's why im not sure, i dont have a 1155 chipset board to confirm if my theory is correct.

However H Strong is correct about the multiplier overclocking method if you are just using the multiplier to raise your Overclock frequency on your cpu then it shouldn't affect the ram.

I am overclocking using the multipier, set it at 45 and set the voltage offset to + .200. Kept my blck at stock 100 mhz. I did actually buy the ram as two separate 8gb kits. Both sets went bad and the vengeance is the only type of ram I've tried as I ordered it online from newegg. So I need to buy an entire 16 gb kit instead of 2 8gb kits?

He has the 2500k, as in the one that has the unlocked multiplier. I have been having trouble overclocking, but I am pretty sure if he got the 2500k to 4.5 ghz and his ram didn't immediately combust, then he must have used the multiplier and not the blck.

You can barely change BLCK on SB CPUs. Even if you were overclocking BCLK for some reason, there's no way you can overclock it far enough to be detrimental to your RAM. If both your kits have gone bad that's most unfortunate, but I don't see how your CPU overclock could have anything to do with that.

That is correct for the most part. However, I also bought vengeance ram, non-low-pro (i took the heat spreaders off mine thumb.gif ), and though it could do 1600 MHz, it had to be set via xmp profile. I've read on the forms that if you get 2 kits, even of the same type and from the same company, they may not actually work well together and can cause problems. I suspect that to be the case here, but only if you did not get a 16GB kit.

I have a Asrock Z68 Extreme7 board myself and overclocked my 2500k to 4.5Ghz as well, but that didn't give me any ram issues. I would suggest testing each stick one at a time and see if they are still reported as bad. If they come back as good from the individual tests, my best guess is that they are not playing nice with each other.

EDIT: spelling errors mad.gif

Alright bro, well he confirmed that. Thank you for addressing the OP's question.

Try this guide, Also try lowering your ram frequency to see if that helps?

Oh yea i agree with above poster, test each stick at a time running memtest. Can help you narrow down if you actually got a bad set of ram.
