Can overclocking CPU cause RAM to go bad? - Page 2

Both sets went bad and the vengeance is the only type of ram I've tried as I ordered it online from newegg. So I need to buy an entire 16 gb kit instead of 2 8gb kits?

When you get 2 kits more then likely they are not going to run at the specified timings when running them both. Have you tried testing them just 1 kit at a time? If each kit passes testing by itself then you can probably get both kits working by setting the RAM voltage a little higher and/or loosening the timings.

If somebody bought 2 kits of the exact same ram, would they suffer from this problem? Or can you get different ram and it be fine so long as you take the time to pick ram with the same voltage/ timing and such?

Okay thanks for all the help. I am going to just get the 16 gb kit as memtest is finding errors in both separate sets of ram. I'll let you know how that works.

From what I have gathered, yes. I'm not sure if different ram with the same stats would behave any better or not, but if what blazed_1 is correct and loosening the timings can help the situation, I would guess different ram wouldn't (or two of the same kits) matter as much.

So I finally received my replacement parts (decided to have cpu, mobo, psu replaced to rule out all possibilities) and instead of low profile vengeance I decided to get a 16gb kit of 1600 7-8-8-24 Dominator (had to remove the top heat spreaders to clear the noctua d-14). All is working great so far, I think I even received a better CPU as I am having no problems overclocking it to 4.8 ghz at 1.37 v core (around a +.020 offset) when before I could not get it to oc without high voltages (unless it was all a consequence of bad ram). We will see after a couple days if everything is still good though.

Thank you! I will update if anything else happens, I have had a couple random computer freezes so I did a memtest and everything was good. Not sure what is up so I lowered the overclock and that seems to have worked, we will see. I also had the crossfire card randomly disappear from the device manager. Any thoughts on this??

Not so sure about that one... A quick suggestion would be to reseat, and make sure power cables are fully seated in the card.
