HTML link crashes computer??

Thread Starter
I was talking to my dad and he said that when he clicked on a link his entire computer instantly shutdown, no fans spinning, nothing. Just off. He could get it to boot (sometimes) but it would only stay on for a short while before crashing. Eventually he went out and bought another power supply and that seemed to fix it. So he clicked the link again and blam, off his computer goes. Except now it wont even turn on.

He did try clicking on the link from another computer and it worked fine (brave? stupid?).

He sent me the link and asked if I'd look into it (and I'm curious enough to). But naturally I just don't want to go clicking that link trying to get it to crash. So here's what I'm asking/don't know:

-I don't know even HTML to effectively look at it (and it's quite long)
-If I load a VM and run it from there, I assume that it's still possible to bork my actual hardware right?
-Is there any effect way to look into this (with minimum risk)?

Thanks.

I only recommend Clicking the link inside a virtual machine.

I'm curious about this.

google turned up some info about an html email bomber.

i would recommend testing it in a VM. if it is an exploit that crashes the computer by using all the system resources, it would be fine to try in a VM. just open up task manager and see what happens when you click the link.

That, however, shouldn't make any perma damage on the hardware.

Metalmeyhem: ya, I'm serious. I know it sounds farfetched, but my dad described it pretty well, so I'm not immediately going to through it out the window (and he's not computer illiterate either). It was also a fairly old computer, so who knows how old those drivers were.

I did click the link and nothing happened. Ill post the link when I get back to work.

I actually did do this. Nothing runs when the link is clicked. All it does it go to the "More Information" tab on the page.

Anyways, here's the links:
Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
The first link is just the general page. The 2nd link is the one in question. On the general page (1st) link, it's the "MORE INFO" button.

Also, for what it's worth as I didn't mention it before, it was on a XP SP2 computer using the Opera browser.
