7970 vs. 7950 - What am I missing with these OCs?

I'm looking at an SLI/Crossfire upgrade from my GTX 570 (mostly because I hate that my card is non-reference so my water block only has ports on the bottom). The 7970 and 7950 are the newest cards, so they seemed like a good place to start. I was trying to compare the overclock potential and dollar value of each card, and I came across these two reviews from Guru of 3D:

7970: http://www.guru3d.com/article/radeon-hd-7970-overclock-guide/1

7950: http://www.guru3d.com/article/radeon-hd-7950-overclock-guide/

It looks like the 7950 has much more upward movement in its overclock. The stock P score from 3D Vantage is (obviously) significantly higher on the 7970, but when they are both overclocked to the max Guru could get them to, here are the results:

7970: P30939
7950: P30657

That's less than a 1% difference between the cards! I'm not extremely experienced on these things, so I'm looking for help:

If I'm willing to overclock my cards, is there any reason to get the 7970 over the 7950?????

With the 69XX cards the 6950 was a minor skip in performance from the 6970. Same with Xfire.

I decided the grab a 7950 instead of the 7970 exactly because the 7950 can get pretty much spot on what a 7970 can get when you OC them both. Saved over a hundred dollars and got really good cooling with this one so I can OC crazy with low temps and near silent fan. You should do the same too - just get whatever non-ref 7950 you like the best. I read a few reviews and decided to go with the gigabyte as it got consistent ratings of being the best non-ref cooling design. thumb.gif

I think I will! I'll go with a reference card (or two) because the water blocks are a little easier to find, but thanks for your input!

Glad I could help! biggrin.gif

Under water those things are going to be beasts! Even on air they OC like a crazy town train whatever the hell that is! tongue.gif

Also knowing how drivers go I would expect at least a 10% bump in performance over the next 6 months as they iron out and optimize the drivers. biggrin.gif
