7970 vs. 7950 - What am I missing with these OCs? - Page 3

I'm able to run 3dmark11 and Vantage on my 7950 at 1255/1725 @ 1.27V. I have a Gigabyte Windforce, and its water cooled. Max load temps don't hit 40C biggrin.gif My 2500K is also overclocked to 5GHz, so keep in mind that that will affect your overall score, especially in 3dmark11, as a low physics score will hurt your overall.

My best so far:
9248 in 3dmark11
34720 in Vantage, GPU score of 39191

Edit: I also had trouble unlocking overclocking past CCC limits. Had to do a full and complete nuke of old drivers and software, down to searching for files, going through the registry, etc. I then installed the drivers that came with my card, along with Afterburner beta 12, and have been great since.

Very impressive. Are you going to run 1.27V 24/7? I know your temps are great, but that seems age-limiting.

I purchased the Sapphire (arrives tomorrow), but the full EK water block isn't released until next week. I won't have it installed and OCed for a couple of weeks.

Both are the same, silicon wise. So Dont be fooled by the "7970 oc-s more than 7950". Yes they might use better memchips and some mature "high power" gpus, but the diff is small. Also the 7950 is underclocked with respect to 7970. It all ends up in the cost are u willing to pay 200$s more, for the more or less same avg. fps? Note that min fps is always higher on the 7970.

I back down to 1100/1600 with core voltage at 1.2V for gaming and such, which this card also did while it was air cooled for a day lol. Card was fine, max temps around 60C.

Nice, my 7970 runs Vantage at 1260/1750 at 1175mV rolleyes.gif

I'm only pointing out that 7970s are probably better binned smile.gif

Just found a brand new 7970 on ebay for $520 and pulled the trigger -- seemed worth the $45 difference from Amazon's Sapphire 7950.

I'm a hypocrite.

its only really $100 more , ref 7950s are 449 and ref 7970s are 549 . More custom 7950s run all the way to 499 , 7970s 599. are you talkin about crossfire ?

You sir need to not be fooled into thinking the 7950 is the same as a 7970. How do you think you will overclock the 7950 to the same speeds as a 7970 with 75w of less power kookoo.gif

Yep, binned for lower voltage at stock clock. The stock clocks on a 7950 are heavily underclocked so hitting that at stock voltage is dead easy. Hitting 7970 stock clocks is a bit harder. But the amount of great silicon AMD's been able to put out really speaks to their credit.
