Dual boot Windows 7 and Ubuntu 12.04 BETA 1

Thread Starter
Ok guys I need some help here. First off let me start off by saying I've done this before with no problems but never with a SSD RAID 0 array.

Ok so I have Windows 7 already installed on a RAID 0 using two OCZ Vertex 3 120GB SSDs, I'm trying to install Ubuntu 12.04 BETA 1 to dual boot with. The problem is that Ubuntu LIVE CD wont detect a Windows 7 partition and it wont give me the option to "Install alongside Windows"

I also get this for the available partitions:

338

And.......

338

How can I set this up? Anyone done this before? please help...

Thanks

Sorry for double post but I also wanted to show this other image:

I chose "Something Else" option because as you can see I don't get the usual third "Install alongside Windows" option.... thinking.gif

I'd assume it has to do with the RAID settings being in the way. Were you able to make another partition in windows?

I just did a fresh install of Windows, I haven't created any other partitions in Windows. Normally I would just "Install alongside Windows" or worse case scenario create the needed Linux partitions myself. However this right now has me completely lost as to what to do... thinking.gif

Well I don't know about RAID0 but I've always made it a habit of making the partitions in Windows prior to installing Linux unless it's on a Linux only box. So is there any reason you can't make another partition?

Well, I actually resized my RAID 0 and left Windows with 80GB, after that then i got the option to "Install alongside them" I went with that until.....

Well, this is definitely beyond my scope. All I know is that I have problems if I don't put the bootloader on the windows partition. But I'm stilling saying since you're running RAID0 that the problems are from that fact. Maybe you can ask Rothen, Plan9, or Shrak (more skilled members of this section) and see if they have an answer.

Haven't ever run/installed my Linux on a RAID disk, as I have never seen a point for it except for on my storage drives where all my data is anyways, so I won't be of much help here, I would assume it'd be to overwrite the Windows 7 Loader though. But don't take my word for it, again' haven't used RAID on an OS drive.

I find it quite sad how I've gotten far more help here in Overclock Forums than the famed Ubuntu Forums... Thank you guys I really appreciate the help a lot.

So I already have Ubuntu installed, now it's only a matter of installing GRUB2 (My favourite) or using EasyBCD (Not a fan) which I can't seem to be able to set up correctly... I would prefer if there was a way to install GRUB2 on a RAID 0. biggrin.gif

The "famed" Ubuntu forums? Lol. The Ubuntu forums are by far the absolute worst Linux community out there. Which replies include but not limited to, "Google it" , " RTFM" or for people that don't know the acronym " Read the F'ng Manual " , " Search " , or just blatently ignoring. Rarely does anyone get help there.

Most other Distro's though have extremely good support, but Ubuntu's forums have always been horrid.

Also, you could join any of the Linux IRC channels to ask for help, plenty of helpful people there and also a bit speedier responses than forums tongue.gif

If you're already booting into Linux I would say just go ahead and install GRUB if you can. Googling around doesn't help much, and neither do any of the Wiki's I've looked at.

Archs; https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/GRUB2#Raid

Ubuntu's; https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Grub2#Reinstalling
Quote:
Reinstall GRUB 2 (substitute the correct device with sda, sdb, etc. Do not specify a partition number):

grub-install /dev/sdX

If the system partitions are on a software RAID install GRUB 2 on all disks in the RAID. Example (software RAID using /dev/sda and /dev/sdb):

grub-install /dev/sda
grub-install /dev/sdb
