Need Help Picking a Power Supply

Thread Starter
Well, I'll just start out with this. While I like to consider myself knowledgeable with computers and their parts, power supplies are my weak point. I really don't know what I should be looking for and what makes one PSU better than another. That is where I am hoping you guys could help. I'll be running a single 6950 flashed to a 6970, along with a 2500k. I used PSUCalc to determine I need something better than approximately 425W, so I was looking at something a little higher to be safe. Maybe something that will allow me to crossfire in the future, but that's not a priority. Just want something that works well that won't break the bank. Looking to spend no more than $70 for one, shipping included if possible.

I'd appreciate any input you can give.

Thanks,
NV43

If PSUCalc says that you need 425W, then that's all you need. You don't need additional headroom. Have a look at the Rosewill Capstone 450W to meet your current requirements. It's a top-notch unit that will serve you very well. I have one and it's fantastic.

However, if you are indeed going to add a second GPU, then that won't do. What does PSUCalc say is required if you add a second GPU?

You want 450w for one card, 650w for two, 750-800w if you intend folding with 2 cards. There's plenty of great units out there in both categories. Avoid the Corsair TX650, it has the guts to run 2 cards, just not the cabling to let you actually do it.

if you are only running one card i think the corsair would be fine its also Semi Modular so it comes with the cable to run a second card if you ever want to

Says I need 650W for crossfire overclocked 6970's and an overclocked 2500k (should I be putting my unlocked 6950 in as a 6950 or a 6970?).

I'll look into the PSU you suggested, as well as the others.

On back order. How do I order? Do I have to wait and hope it stays the same price?

If you want some headroom you can use something like my tx750 which has held up for quite a while now.
