Confused: Raising FSB increases processor speed, but multiplier doesn't? - Page 3

Ideally you'd want the lowest multiplier that you can run without reaching your RAM's maximum speed, having a faster HTT bus and faster RAM is much more beneficial than simply raising the multiplier and leaving everything else slower. Also keep that RAM at 1:1 no matter what, dividers are never a good idea.

Ah, ok.. I'm finally grasping the locked multiplier concept.. You just OC it a different way.

Question about the CPU/mem ratio. I don't have a list of ratios to select from, just a list of regular clock speeds, 400, 333, etc...

What am I going for here?

thats correct, Only FX Athlon 64 have unlocked multipyers. ur multplyer can go down, but not up. also the old K6s are unlocked, and it is Very easy to unlock the socket A Duron/Athlon chips. Athlon XPs can also be unlocked, but its tricky. For you, to get going fast, bring down ur Multiplyer to 9 (you dont have to, but if u plan to OC more then ~500MhZ its a good idea.) lower to HT link down, and memory down. u can easly hit 2.8 with ur chip with the right cooling

Well, I just started playing around again... the last time I rebooted, got into my OS and then got the crap scared out of me when my speakers started busting out a ridiculously loud and annoying static...

Needless to say, I restarted, went into my BIOS and set everything back to default.

What ticks me off, is that I'd like to think of myself as fairly intelligent, and experienced with hardware and software - heck, I built the dang system myself, just as I've done for 11 years since I was 15.

The thing that's kicking my butt is that certain things/settings are called/referred to differently from BIOS to BIOS. I often can't tell if I've changed everything I need to change, missed something, don't recognize something, etc...

Ugh..

I'm going to take a break from trying to OC this thing. After all, it has a lot of premium and good quality stuff that I don't want to bust up..

Unless of course, you guys could take a look at my stock CPU-Z settings and give me some heads-up ;-) Remember, the multi on this chip is locked.

Thanks again everybody.

I had it up to 245 earlier without changing *anything* else. But, like I said in my last post, it's all back at default right now because from BIOS to BIOS, a lot of things are called different names and I can't identify what certain things are...

hmm, u can always post the words u donk know... where here to help... cus overclocking is fun, plus we dont want u to screw anything up. but if u decide u dont want to OC anymore..... that fine.
