Gigabyte 990FXUD3 + AMD965 Constant failed overclocks.

Hello everyone,

I have upgraded from a single 6850 to a Crossfire setup. I have been getting poor framerate in battlefield 3 on High settings, low shadows, no AA, No Motionblur and AF at 8x. My framerate will run great at 45-90 and then all of the sudden it will drop to like 29. I have tried overclocking my CPU (Perhaps a bottleneck) but I cannot get a stable overclock. ANYTHING over 3.4ghz is a fail at some point in time. Anyone with a similar setup to mine have any insight as to how I can get this puppy running at GHz?

Thanks.

Just an update: After some further analysis, MSI Afterburner reports that both of my GPU usage is around 55-60% and my CPU is nearly pinned at 100 but sometimes drops down to 94-96%. Maybe it is time to get an 8120?

Did you raise the voltage when you tried overclocking?

Yes all the way to 1.52 at 19x Multiplier. I have also tried many variations of FSB + Multi and no cigar. I have not messed with CPUNB voltage, HTLink or anything like that. What is weird on this motherboard though is that the voltage is offset but even if i set it to say, 1.475 in CPU-Z it says the voltage is running at 1.5. Not sure exactly what to think about that.

First of all, this game will surely run poorly on your rig and will be plagued with FPS spikes, due to the processor bottleneck like you mentioned. I myself have not played BF3 on my rig, but I have heard nothing good about AMD with BF3 at high settings. I have recently had the same issue as you though, with my UD3 not letting me overclock. It seems as though CPU/NB overclocking is a must with this board (at least with my ram) to get it running stable. I was unable to any sort of stable OC with my 955 until I upped the CPU/NB frequency to around 2750 (through the FSB). Once you increase the freq of the CPU/NB however, you will for sure need to overvolt it. Up the voltage under "CPU/NB" voltage to 1.25 to 1.35, depending on what gives you stability. As for the fluctuating voltages, this is also standard with this board, the vdroop and boost is pretty bad. If you have the revision 1.1 board, you can balance this out somewhat by changing the Load Line Calibration setting, but otherwise you just have to know how much it changes between the value in the bios and what shows up in CPUZ and take that into account when setting the value. Hope this helps a little, there should be no reason you cant get that 965 to 4Ghz, and it should help framerates for sure, although you still may see some spikes thumb.gif

Successful overclock at 3.9GHz. It is running a little hot but I need to flip my H60 air intake, which should alleviate that. By overclocking .5GHz I have seen only 9 percent increase in GPU activity. I really want to see how these 6850's can handle BF3 but I suppose I will have to wait until I upgrade my CPU to a bulldozer or maybe even wait for piledriver. What do you guys think the odds are that I can get my 965 to ~4.3-~4.5 GHz?

I would say 1 in 10, it is not often to see a 965 stable over 4.2 Ghz, especially since the voltage stability isnt that great on the 990FX UD3. Temps on your H60 might be close to the max too, be sure to watch that. No harm in trying though thumb.gif

H60 is not a great cooler and it's rare to see > 4.2 GHz. stable on a 965. regardless

BF3 runs perfectly fine on AMD systems of the right capacity on Ultra. I had rock solid frames with my crossfire. (Though, thats the only game that I can jusitfy this crossfire purchase, such a waste with others).

I have the revised board, and no, LLC will not help your Vdroop/boost out while under load.

EDIT: And do not use CPU-Z to monitor the voltage on this board. Use CPUID HWmonitor to see the full ugly of the vboost while you are stress testing. I'm at 1.47 in bios and can spike at 1.57v while running ITB, fun stuff.
