You don't make an OS for the future, you make it run well on the computers it's going to be running on. OS X is coded for computers that have a 500MHz G4, and 4 3GHz Xeon cores. Linux can run on a 386 and the largest, most powerful computers in the world. Why can't Windows?
alright - but not well. vista works on my hardware alright - but not well - just like in past years.

sure you can get linux distros that work on ancient hardware - but who really runs those without adding a ton of features - unless they're working with old hardware. the more aesthetically pleasing distros (that run XGL and such) need better hardware to run well - just as Vista will.

The issue here is both Linux and Windows are moving away from the baseline....in opposite directions.

XGL + Compiz probably runs quite well on a GF6200, or maybe even onboard GF6100. Aero?...nope, no hope; you'll need a 7600GT at least.

I was just reading about that and for a drop in encoding and I won't mention the gaming aspect as I saw the 40% decrease if FEAR at 4x AA...it appears to be a more CPU orientated OS which will be brutal to the everyday consumer. A high range CPU isn't pocket change and good RAM the same.
The fact that it is gearing the market to believe that these components will be necessary to run the OS properly is really lame.
It's not like XP PRO is going to be wiped off the planet anytime soon...

So why won't DX10 run on XP? I think if DX10 did run on XP, most gamers wouldn't even care for vista. So pretty much, they're saying "you need our OS to run future games, and you need an uber computer to run this OS. Also, your future games are gonna run slower than if they were able to run on XP, but they can't run on XP so you gotta buy this and therefore an uber computer..." and now i'm just going in circles.

You answered your own question. DirectX is made my Microsoft, so in order to run the latest games, you have to give MS $300, and get a slower, more cluttered interface in return.

LMAO

Yeah, first pre-built system I ever bought (first PC too, all previous systems were Macs) was a Gateway in 1998. I pulled it out of the box, set it up, connected everything and turned it on, it booted into windows and I moved the mouse to click on My Computer....didn't even get halfway across the screen and it went blue screen with a Fatal Error warning.

Turned to my wife and said "They dind't set this up right, it crashed."

She looks at me and says "No, that happens, just reboot and see if it works."

Like I said, the willingness of people to accept shoddy work and poor performance just stunned me. My Mac Performa crashed 3 times in 4 years......and all 3 were due to AOL......

Bottomline, all I have seen about Vista is new security.......and it's been hacked.....it's new look with AERO....which is only available on the higher end versions and many system will not be able to run.....and many more people simply won't care.....and of course, DX10.....which is really only for games.......

So what do we have? We have a buggy, incomplete OS, that once stripped down to run semi-efficiently and on many systems will look and perform similar if not worse than the current OS........so how is that an upgrade?
Not to get "off topic", but I have a beta version of Vista. It would not fully launch on my system though. I tried several times, w/ no luck....Is anyone else a Microsoft Performance Pack, subscriber? If so...the disk can be found in the october edition, booklet.

Ugh... Well that sucks. I don't really know what DX is or does, just that games need it. So couldn't game developers meet together and come up with a new standard? Why should microsoft make the standard for gaming? Guess they're just too powerful.
