Why get a 7970 when I can get a 7950?

Thread Starter
I have 2x reference Sapphire 7970s on launch day for my new BF3 PC build. It was a couple weeks before any reviews of the 7950 or any news of the 7950 for that matter so I couldn't wait. The 7970s were sold out everywhere and I picked mine up for $599 each on Amazon because they were the only ones in stock. These cards are fast yes, I can OC them both to 1175mhz in CF, and single card, I can OC one of them to 1275, but at what costs? Noise! While reviews say these fans are quieter than 69xx series, they are still loud to me, coming from GTX 570s. While noise is subjective, I find anything above 35% fan speed too loud and because of that, I leave my cards either at stock 925/1375@0.975v or 1025/1475@1.05v to keep the fan at 35% fan speed to keep temps under 80c under load.

These 7950s roll out and they OC just as well as 7970s. I have been following in the 7970/50 thread and almost everyone has great success overclocking their 7950s to 1100+. Performance wise if both cards were set at 1100mhz, it would be near identical in games, and even benchmarks. Everyone has non reference 7950s like Gigabyte or TFIII for $499, so basically I could have saved $200 for CF. I would actually have better performance if I went with two 7950 non reference because the only thing keeping me back with the 7970s is the noise. I would have been able to OC the 7950s probably up to 1100mhz, even if only 1000mhz, it would still be quieter and cheaper. I almost wished the 7950 wasn't able to OC to much or be so fast so there should actually be a reason to get a 7970.

TLDR: I'm crying because I spent $200 more for less performance because I have sensitive ears and I want someone to tell me everything will be okay.

Everything will be ok if you send me your cards biggrin.gif

Spend $200 more on waterblocks. Clock to 1300 + and leave those 7950 behind.

This 100%. smile.gif My 7970 noise is driving me insane, and I've got just one (I came from a 580). So I plan to build a full loop once I've got the funds saved up. You should do the same. wink.gif You'll get even higher overclock potential, lower temperatures, AND less noise. smile.gif

Yes, I know I should have, but that would've cost me ANOTHER $100. I already gave him almost $1200, I couldn't give him MORE! tongue.gif Plus I'm still not ready yet to water cool. It's going to cost me about $500 in total to do it (new case that'll hold it all, plus a full CPU / GPU loop).

But the OP definitely should if noise is a problem. smile.gif

Or you can also get the Accelero Extreme for the 7970 as well.

Haha, I absolutely understand, just giving ya a hard time tongue.gif

+1 for the Accelero as well if WC isn't a viable option. I LOVED my old accelero.
