The most important is the center as thats the place where all the cores are. The full surface of the metal plate of the CPU is not that big because of the cores inside need that much room, no it's just that big so it can spread the heat comming of the cores very fast over a larger surface.

But the center is the real hot-spot.

And in theory you don't need thermal paste. (some people just lap their cpu and cooler and don't use thermal paste)

The thermal paste is not the thing that cools the stuff. In fact, when using to much of it (to thick) it will become an insulator and the heat can't pass through it well enough so the effect will be even worse and the cpu will get hotter!!!

It's just for making sure the 2 different metals (cpu and cooler) are making contact.

Cause with the naked eye both surfaces look very flat. But microscopic view shows there are very very tiny holes/gaps in each metal.

So if you "fill" it up with thermal paste, it passes the heat thrue. (Else it has to pass via the air captured in the holes/gaps and air passes heat slower then thermal paste...

So lapping them both creates 2 surfaces as smooth as a mirror making "perfect" contact, no thermal paste needed. Lap it wrong and your screwed...

Should be something like this tongue.gifwink.gif

Due to some personal issues I couldn't tweak my PC this week. But I did buy a new cooler (hyper 612 pwm) and case, and I'm planning on assembly next weekend. I'll do a ov and tell ya all how it went.
