None of them work with the new 79xx line, though, and I dont know if 7950/7970 work together or not. Any more info than that you will have to ask someone or research yourself. Nvidia side its a lot more strict. They have to be the same GPU with the same memory bus width and the same working parts (for example, a GTX 460 1GB and GTX 768MB are the same GPU and physically the same card but the 768 has a portion of the card disabled, and these will not work together). A lot of the confusion happens in the 460/560 lines since there are so many variations of them, but you shouldnt be looking at these anyway for your needs.
I would recommend either:
Waiting for the new Nvidia card to come out this (rumored) month. See what happens. If anything the price of 580s could drop.
Buying now, get a pair of 7970/7950s. Unless you need Nvidia for something, which it sound like you dont, as of right now AMD is a better buy for the money.
It just depends on if you are in a hurry to buy or not.

You sure about that 460 example? From my understanding they should be able to SLI as they have the same GPU, but the card with 1GB will downgrade and only be able to use 768MB to match the other card.

Oh ok so if I get a 3GB and cross fire with a 1GB the 3GB will drop to only using 1GB? So I shouldn't mix these:

I plan on getting two of the first link though, will two of those be good for running a game like BF3 on max settings with 3 monitors? I have a nice mobo, I dont have time to find it right now but it cost around 400

EDIT: Typo.

you said you want to spent 700~800 on gpu's.

even tho you dont like ait your best shot here is the 3gb 7950's, they should be ~$400/each.
and will use less power then a GTX580 3gb. and probably be slightly faster.

its the same stuff just different name and drivers. and ati drivers arent all that bad as people say they are, they just think 5 years in the past.

Yeah because I also want to get a EK watercooler. But what do you think, will they be able to play BF3 on max settings with 3 monitors?

p.s. I found out how to change the fourm to 2D.

You can mix VRAM amounts, but everything has to be the same AFAIK. This means that you can SLI 1/2GB 460/560s, 1.25/2.5GB 570s, 1.5GB/2GB 580s. You can not mix between the different 460s and 560s, 768MB included.

And, (@OP) yes, you will be limited to the amount of VRAM that the card with the least VRAM has, and that goes for both Nvidia and AMD. Each card needs a copy of the same data, so you dont get twice as much VRAM. And since they need to have the same thing on VRAM, if you have a 1 GB and 2 GB card, you can have 1.5GB of data on the 2GB but not on the 1GB, so you are limited to 1GB if that makes any sense. Sorry if this only confuses you more... not sure how to explain it better.

I figured this, when the gtx 480 came outthey cost about 600. Now, you can get it for 100. So I will just go with only 7950's, then once the price goes sown I will get a third one. So yeah thanks everybody.

lol. You just confused the hell out of me.

1GB 460 can SLI with a 768MB 460....but it would result in the 1GB card using 768MB
1GB 460 can SLI with a 1GB 460....would result in the 1GB

Cannot SLI 460 with a 560

If you ave a 1GB card and a 2GB card, you can only use 1GB. The data is mirrored across the cards. The GPUs have to be the same, everything else (clocks, timings, vram, etc) all go off of the lowest common denominator of the cards.

IE, you could sli a 460 with a Super Clocked 460, but both cards are going to run only as fast as the slowest card.
