Upgrade Asus M3A78-T, AMD Phenom 9950 desktop workstation

Whew... it's been a couple of years since I've researched new computer builds. I'm hoping you might offer some advice on renovating my system. I want something that powerful for graphics applications, as well as impressive games. FarCry2 is my current favorite and part of my upgrade plan is certainly in anticipation for FarCry3 in September. Anyway... biggrin.gif

Here's what's in my box:

CPU: AMD Phenom 9950 2.6GHz AM2+ 140W Quad-Core Processor
(Need compatible recommendation, thinking AMD Phenom II X4 975 BE Deneb 3.6GHz AM3 125W)

Motherboard: ASUS M3A78-T AM2+/AM2 HDMI ATX
(Still good?)

Graphics: Sapphire Radeon HD 4870 512MB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Ex
(Ordered EVGA GeForce GTX 560 Ti 2048 MB GDDR5 PCI Express 2.0 02G-P3-1568-KR)

RAM: OCZ Reaper HPC 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 1066
(Still good?)

Hard Drive: Western Digital Raptor 10,000RPM 8MB Buffer
(Still good?)

Optical Drive: Two Samsung CD/DVD combos
(Will look up a good BluRay combo drive)

OS: Windows Vista x64 Home Premium
(Upgrade to Windows 7 after all hardware changes complete)

Power: PC Power & Cooling Silencer 750W Quad Blue
(Good enough)

Motherboard: ASUS M3A78-T AM2+/AM2 HDMI ATX
(Still good?) Nope, you'll need an AM3 or and Am3+ motherboard
Graphics: Sapphire Radeon HD 4870 512MB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Ex
(Ordered EVGA GeForce GTX 560 Ti 2048 MB GDDR5 PCI Express 2.0 02G-P3-1568-KR) Good choice thumb.gif

(Still good?) You'll need to upgrade to DDR3 so that It will work in your new motherboard
Hard Drive: Western Digital Raptor 10,000RPM 8MB Buffer
(Still good?) Yes
Optical Drive: Two Samsung CD/DVD combos
(Will look up a good BluRay combo drive) Blu-ray drives are only worth it if you actually plan on playing/writing Blu-ray discs.

Cool, thanks. Glad I scored on that graphics card purchase.

But are you sure about that proc? I was under the impression that an AM3 will fit and function well inside AM2+ boards, since there's more than enough pin holes and the board figures out the design.... probably requires a BIOS flash. Check out this ASUS motherboard compatibility report. The manufacturer has AM3 procs listed, including that Phenom IIX4 975. Will an AM3 in an AM2 board not work well -- or not at all? Have you tried it?

... not that I don't totally look forward to every opportunity to switch motherboards tongue.gif

(I hope my next MB doesn't have those damn USB connector pins that seem to require hands the size of a chipmunk).

Your right, That processor will work with Bios updates, I forgot about that.

That will save you a couple of bucks on a new mobo + ram I guess.

Thought so. I found this Asus M3A78-T Motherboard AM3 Reverse Compatibility Review. thumb.gif

I wonder how much of a system bottleneck my Phenom X4 9950 will cause with the GeForce GTX 560 Ti...? I'll dump the Radeon HD 4870 GPU tomorrow for it, and then test the new configuration's FPS with Far Cry 2. I'm sure I'll notice a significant boost after adding an AMD Phenom II X4 975... it seems like that's the best proc upgrade for my current mobo.

Considering the 9950 is about as powerful as a Athlon II, I would say that there wouldn't be a bottleneck.
However, with the Phenom II in games such as BFBC2 and GTA IV, you'll notice your FPS increase dramatically.

the Phoenom II 960T will out perform the 975 not to mention the 960T could unlock to a 6 core where the 975 can't

The only way the 960T would be faster than the 975 is if you overclocked the 960T passed 3.6 Ghz or if you unlocked the extra 2 cores successfully.

But if you leave the 960T at stock and locked, then it's gonna be a bad choice.

It really all depends on what the OP plans to do.
