Saying Goodbye to x58 - Page 3

You won't be disappointed with those upgrades. Much more satisfying than a side-grade.

Pretty much, but OP hasn't stated at all what they do with their computer. Do they game a lot? Are they a coder? Nothing is clear, besides an apparent disdain and a NEED to leave x58. X58 still is an extremely powerful platform for workstation class applications, not even counting gaming and regular needs (where it is still overkill). I'd get a better board than mine (my ud3r isn't the best) and a 970 used, but at that point, I might as well get the new i5's

The reason I am leaving the x58 and going with a new build is coding kernels for the galaxy nexus, themes for the nexus, gaming, free lance 3D Studio Max graphic work, and website development. I have noticed significant loss of throughput from the cpu. I remote in from my laptop at work and continue to do these various task.

I am upgrading the GPU with a new xfx hd 7970 double d. And the reason why I don't think it is going to last much longer is this:

Thank you for clarifying thumb.gif

Go right ahead with the purchase of your i7 2600k, and look into a nice z68 board. In the future, Ivy bridge is also compatible with z68 boards, so you'll be set for a while. I could recommend getting any number of the top tier boards, there are quite a few of them.

Good luck with your transition!

Thanks right now everything is in shipping process. Yes I did get a nice z68 board and wanted to set myself up to possible upgrade in the future. Sorry for the lack of details in my original post as the needs of a well fine tuned running rig is my source of extra income as well as enjoyment.

I will be posting pics of the new build.

You might be able to extend the life of your CPU somewhat if you back off your overclock. TBQH if I knew I was buying a CPU possibly near the end of its useful life I'd want it discounted.

He does stand to benefit from it through income. It is unknown in the time span of two months how much OP could earn. In cases like this, its more harm than not. He obviously needs the OC for compiling and rendering. And z68 has the benefit that OP could later just plop in a 3770k, OC that to 5ghz+ and gain up to 15% of performance increase and a new cpu in the process. Fun stuff.

Congrats OP. Post a RE-Build Log for when your stuff arrives.

Not sure how to post a Re-build log or is that the same as the build rig? Also I am going to keep the current rig up and running for a full 24/7 Folding Machine running linux distro.
