Neither of my monitors have service tags. Just serial numbers. Same for the boxes. I bought both of mine on Dell's website with my Dell credit account. I don't think they put service tags on anything aside from computers?

All Dell monitores have Service Tags, at least the U2711 and U3011 do, not sure about others as I never seen them in person.

My Dell RMA nightmare is beginning for the second time. I have a u2711 (revision A00) from two years ago. I remember when I first got the u2711 two years ago, I had to get 3 replacements due to stuck pixels. At one point I had 3 of those monitors cluttering up my house. Support sucked just as bad then as it does now. Anyways 2 years on I have started to have problems with monitor. I get these weird artifacts intermittently on the left side of the screen, even when plugged into no sources. They go away after awhile but eventually come back. I was quite happy with the monitor and I don't want to go through this exchange hell again. I just received the first refurbished replacement, and it actually had a scratched screen. This makes me sad because it has no other problems. I already have a second replacement on the way. So far I have probably done two hours on the phone with dell support.

Also the express service code is the worst. I enter it in digitally at the beginning of the call, then I get booted around to 5 different people who all ask me for the code again and for an explanation of the problem. I actually now get better service by not entering it at all. Why do they even give you a service code, when every time they want the stupid serial number too. Don't they have all these things correlated in a database? After that they give you a service request number to track your case, which I have had them lose all record of once already.
