Nvidia GK104 GPU being shown - Auto Overclock Questions & Discussions

Read this from Tweak Town today regarding the GK104.

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 680 can overclock... itself!

To sum it up 10% slower than 7970 in 3DMark11 and 10% faster in BF3. Over clocks itself which will result in higher minimum FPS.

Not bad for thier low end GPU. thumb.gif

The GK107 due out in April and the GK110 in May.

Now the interesting part:
Quote:
NVIDIA will introduce a load-based clock speed-boost feature (think: Intel Turbo Boost), which steps up clock speeds of the graphics card when subjected to heavy loads. If there's a particularly stressing 3D scene for the GPU to render, it overclocks itself, and sees the scene through. This ensures higher minimum and average frame-rates.

What I find interesting is the ability to auto over clock itself and wonder how this will play into us manually over clocking the base Core / Memory / Shader clocks ourselves?

If the end result is that by this auto over clocking will allow the GPU to step up during critical moments thus increasing the minimum FPS average it may be a good thing.

However if the auto over clocking doesn't over clock as high as we can by our selves then it may actually limit those of us that do over clock possibly.

Let's assume we can still over volt and over clock our GPU's and the GPU reaches that peak where graphic rendering gets critical, will it take it a step further beyond our manual over clock that may cause it to black screen, lock up or possibly BSOD?

Will there be some sort of ceiling (limit) on the auto over clock in the specs of the BIOS itself that will keep it from going past a pre-determined auto over clock level? Will it be by Core / Shader / Memory clocks or by a percentage limit over base?

If it's got a limit then I could see that our manual over clock wouldn't be an issue and allow us to take it to the highest limit of the GPU.

I'm going to assume any factory auto over clock level will auto over clock to a modest one that won't strain the GPU to being unstable.

Am I making any sense in my explanation to the question I have?

I follow you completely AZ, and I was already wondering the same thing before I even got to your post. My reaction is just:

Hey that feature is NEAT!?!

Now how do I turn it off so I can OC the card myself?

That sounds a lot like the Overdrive feature in AMD cards. - which is similar to a dummy OC - for people that don't overclock manually.
It can be turned off in the drivers.

Kepler seems to be abit more complicated as it takes into other factors as temp, load voltage etc...but it could still be a dummy OC.

Actually I should have not said that GK110 in May because it was taken with a grain of salt from a non-confirmable rumor news article.

It will probably be just like overclocking a CPU that has turbo boost.
