NAS build suggestions?

Thread Starter
I'm planning on a NAS build would a Llano APU (A4 or A6) be a good enough platform for a file/media server mainly meant to store movies and other media for my HTPC and other media devices. Asking because I have FM1 motherboard and 430W PSU lying around, which I would love to use.

The main criteria is that It would be powering and spinning at least 8 x 3TB HDD's in RAID 5 (software RAID). Would that have the necessary power?

If the Llano works, then here is what I'm planning:

CPU: A4-3400 2.7Ghz - $65
MoBo (already owned): ECS A75F-M2 - $50 (after MIR)
RAM: Crucial Ballistix Sport 2GB (2 x 1GB) - $18
Case: NZXT Source 220 - $45
PSU (already owned): CORSAIR Builder Series CX430 V2 - $21
Extra Case Fan: NZXT 140mm Case Fan - $16

Total Cost (without HDD's): $215 (has the capacity to hold 21TB of data in RAID 5)

If the Llano does not work (why wouldn't it) then what do I go with? If you have a better suggestion where I do not have to spend a lot (excluding the HDD's) then I'm all ears.

All suggestions are welcome. Thank you!

if you are looking at doing that many drives it would probably be better to get RAID cards rather than run software RAID.

Any suggestions or links for some good but not too expensive RAID cards would be greatly appreciated.

Also could you explain why that hardware RAID would be better in this scenario?

i sugest for an OS you look at freeNAS
http://www.freenas.org/
but runn it of a bootable USB stick as installing it on a HDD makes the rest of the dribve unsuable..
here you can look at RAID-Z
https://blogs.oracle.com/ahl/entry/what_is_raid_z

to make use of the supper ZFS "Zettabyte File System" format you will need 6GB of RAM and it is worth it smile.gif
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ZFS

these setups make great performing NAS servers thumb.gif

Thanks stubass. I was planning on Free NAS until I read about this - UNRAID.

First saw it in this guy's build - Part 1, Part 2 - Part 2 has the software details.

Mainly for easier expansion, as I will not have all the drives at the time of the build, AFAIK this was the only OS that would just let me add drives as we go, does freenas let you do that?

True Incremental Storage

Unlike other RAID systems, unRAID Server supports true incremental storage expansion. You can add capacity by adding more hard drives or by upgrading existing hard drives. This is a great way to make use of older, smaller hard drives you might have laying around.

For example, you might start out by installing one or two new high capacity hard drives along with some number of smaller hard drives you already own. Later, you might decide to replace one of the smaller drives, and unRAID Server will restore the data of the smaller drive onto the new drive, and then expand the file system to incorporate the full size of the new drive.

Here is some more information about unRAID Server

Would Llano work well for this build?

You are right I left out the SATA cards from my list, add $22 more to the cost for this - Biostar SATA III 2 port PCI Express Internal Controller Card, I use one already on my desktop and it works fine.

Would Llano work well for this build?

nah sorry, freeNAS doesnt support unRAID as i am aware..
unRAID would be perfect for what you want to do with your drive managment.. just one pecie of advice, dont put 100% trust in any RAID as data lose is posible so i susgest in time when you can afford it back up your RAID arrays on too external drives, i do for all mine thumb.gif
