[TV] Next Xbox to lose the disc drive, says MCV - Page 15

Obviously a lot of the world isn't ready for digital distribution but not every console needs to appeal to every person on the planet. Products such as the Steam Box are merely the first wave of the future of gaming and media content distribution. It is obvious the world will become much more tightly connected to the internet in the future and this is merely another step towards that future.
So we should cater the the lowest common denominator? Your choice is simple, get faster internet (will become cheaper and more available as time goes on) or don't buy it. Obviously disks will be around for a while (DVDs more than CDs) but flash memory is quickly eliminating that need as well. I'm sure there were plently of VHS tapes still being played after DVDs came out.

The Steam box is also 'rumored' to have an odd as well. Which has been said in this thread and all the Steam console threads so far. So still no comparison there to a new odd-less XBOX. As you'll still have the option to use a disk if so be.

And your view of the way things should work is rather narrow. The point for all these new consoles is for people to buy them, if they see 'can only buy and download games online' it may scare away a vast crowd of people that simply can't do that. That won't make Microsoft any money. Sony tried it with the PSP Go and failed. Miserably. Which is why they came back with another form of physical media. But that's ok for portable games that are relatively small in file size. But when you try putting a 10gb++ game on flash memory, the price effeciency is lost. BD's cost a fraction of what flash drives do.

Simply put, the world just isn't ready. And it isn't just a matter of telling people to get better internet. A lot of cities/towns won't pay to lay new lines to country areas. A few places where some friends live in North Carolina have dial up still, and in order to get upgraded slightly to DSL, would need to have everyone on the street sign a petition, and even that is a crap shoot in itself, since most are older people who could care less about the internet. No interest = no internet for that area. It's either all or nothing for them, and it'll be a while before that happens.

Then if the city/town doesn't want to, you can try to turn to the local ISP's. There's a cable line not 10 miles from where they live. Well, same story, you'd need to petition it and show the ISP that there's enough interest for them to spend the money to put cables out there.

Satellite is a joke. Low speeds and horribly low caps for an ungodly amount of money.

Best case for time being, is to stick to an ODD and Disc. With the option for online store which they already have. They can keep advancing on the online store, while also leaving the ODD for the other people without it hurting them any.

There won't be much, if any, loss of revenue if Microsoft went this route because Xbox makes a vast majority of it's money through online services and it is obvious that they will continue to push Xbox in that direction. As for situations with local legislation and broadband internet available, that is a totally different issue. The fact of the matter is the "old people" that you mention aren't going to be around forever and your broadband dead zone isn't going to stay dead forever. Obviously for Microsoft it makes more sense to completely cater to the majority of their users than to allow the minority to slow down the progression of their console design. To me this announcement is the same thing as saying "the next Xbox won't support non-HD TVs", for me this is good news and progress since I see disks as an inconvenience and outdated.

The downside to digital downloads is we'd be stuck with companies like microsoft, sony, and even worse for pricing, nintendo. Unlike steam these companies aren't all too friendly. I would have grabbed a wii last summer if the only games i wanted (mario) weren't still $50 after being out forever.

Dude, I PHYSICALLY can't get faster internet. There is no infrastructure where I live. You can't just simply get something like that in Australia.

How many times do I have to spell it out to you people? l2read.

Digital will not takeover disks any time soon. It won't happen for many many many years. Millions of Game discs, Music, Movies is not a "Lowest common denominator"

There will be HUDGE lose if they do not include an optical drive. Good luck to them on marketing 720 outside the US where you are lucky to even have a connection. Consoles biggest advantage; they are plug and play, not plug and wait several hours to play.

Nintendo has tried shit like this in the past, and they have failed.

You seem to be mistaking the majority and minorities. Right now it'd be a toss up between the two, but I would think that people on fiber/cable are the minorities. At least in most places. Most places I've traveled to in and out of the states have relatively slow internet, and not by choice.

And how is keeping an odd on the device slowing progression? Why can't they cater to both, majority or minority mean nothing if you can get both equally. And with the lifecycle of consoles being 4~6 years, by the time the next gen console (after this upcoming one) the world might be more prepared for a majority digital medium. But as it is today, we simply aren't ready.

Sigh, you haven't spent much time outside the US. Go live philippines for a year. While there are cafes, the average joe doesn't have the connection to DL large files required games.

Which is what I just said. The world isn't ready for digital distribution. Derp.

Lived in Germany (small town), Spain (country), Chile (crap internet to begin with), and now the U.S., I know how bad the internet is outside of the U.S.

If Microsoft wants to make this viable, AT LEAST sell an optional DVD drive for those who can't spend days downloading a massive game, or those who can't get suitable internet at all, OR those with caps easily maxed out. Make that accessory a reasonable price, and it would cater to a much larger group.

Simple fix Microsoft, lets see if you can handle it thumb.gif

And has anybody thought how much it would be to store a decent library of games? Gamers might actually be forced to decide which games to play with the lack of space, unless suitable flash storage takes a nosedive in price to make it justifiable over a HDD.

Seeing as I don't want to be here all night I will conclude with, it obviously makes sense enough financially for Microsoft to make a move like this. To anyone that thinks it won't sell because the "world isn't ready" I guess you will have to wait for it to release to be proven wrong. This device is supposed to last till around 2018, do you think you won't have decent internet anytime before then? If not and you value this sort this of thing (next gen console gaming) it is time to move or move on. I'm sure the PS4 will still have Blu-ray, thank goodness HDDVD is dead or the next Xbox would have been beating that horse to death as well.

Too all disks: 513
