[TV] Next Xbox to lose the disc drive, says MCV - Page 16

I hope it goes this route so console gamers can feel the pain of not being able to resell their used games.

i 'm pretty sure this is not going to happen, not anytime soon. i mean why can't they just install an ODD? are they going to loose something if they do include it? this is not a mobile device so there is no need to eliminate the ODD

i don't understand why some people are too eager to eliminate that ODD, if you don't want to use it then don't, it's not like it's going to hurt you.

people should realize that united states is not the only country in the word, in the country that where i grew up from for example, very few people there have a decent internet connection.

and for those people that suggesting that they should just use flash drive instead of cd, you don't make sense. what is the advantage of using flash drive over cd? again we are not talking about mobile device here, which does takes advantage of using flash drives.

It seems rather simple, MS is saying if you don't have a good internet connection this simply isn't for you. BTW DVDs max data limit is around 8gb (flash is ever growing) which is the problem since games are already over that limit. I guess some people are completely ok with having to change disks multiple times mid-game. Good luck fitting any next-gen game on one dvd. ODD is just outdated and most people are going to feel nostalgic about losing their precious physical copy. It would be great if the next xbox also had an ssd and thus the elimination of moving parts within the system. To all the people that can't take advantage of this, there is still the WiiU and PS4 for you.

Considering dvds are 8 gigs and I can acquire one nearly instantly vs waiting a while and using up my bandwidth.. no dvd drive will suck.

Here's the thing. This will ruin it for PC gamers price wise because game developers such as Infinity Ward, and publishers such as Activision will still sell their games for $60 or more. If consoles lose their drives, then PC gamers lose their lower prices. The only advantage to this only goes towards the developers because they do not have to lose money using packaging or discs.

Walmart, Gamestop, Target, etc. makes good money off of selling video games though. I highly doubt the consoles will lose any optical drives any time soon.

So, out with carts, in with cd, in with dvd, in with blu-ray, and now... in with solid state storage?

Isn't this kind of like, ending up where you started? Carts are solid state, right?

And this is why we have BD's. Which is still much much cheaper than flash per gb.

You know what, you can have your full on 10++ gb flash games. But when prices go from an already sky high $60 to $80+ to compensate to the added costs of flash. Don't cry that they're too expensive.

More or less. MS could probably just go blu ray, but Sony may not like that.

Sony would love having MS write checks for using blu ray, It MS that doesn't want it.

I won't since I will be downloading them with no need for any type of physical medium to up the price.

It will still up the price. Overall. You can still download games now with discs, but at full retail $60, you don't get a discount now, what makes you think you'd get one with a new console.
