[TV] Next Xbox to lose the disc drive, says MCV - Page 7

The next Xbox is looking worse and worse to me.

While on the one hand I personally wouldn't mind about downloading games (25/25 FiOS) it brings about a whole can of worms I'd rather avoid. First like many people have already stated, a lot of people in the world; even in this country, are not nearly as lucky as I am when it comes to internet speed. Then there is the problem of basically stripping the plug and play ability of a console (I know, I know; how much easier could downloading then playing be? Well tell that to the early teen kids trying to figure that out, on top of that try telling those kids parents that they Credit Card is going to be linked to the system and the kid will be able to buy anything without any real interaction with the parent). Then there is the problem of probably having the games linked to your account thus if you do anything wrong (or if it is simply an accident) and get banned for some reason say goodbye to all your games. On top of all of these; say goodbye to DVD playback (not blu-ray because Microsoft would never pay royalties to a competitor just for that single benefit.)

While there is one significant benefit to this move, there is a whole slew of problems that it brings along. If I wanted another computer; I'd buy another computer. Consoles are suppose to be idiot proof, and digital distribution is far from that. 2cents.gif

In my fantasy land, Nintendo would ship with improved versions of its Gamecube controller, ship with cartridges again, and play all of it's glorious first party titles in 1080p.

It would then kill off Sony and Microsoft consoles, and paired with a PC would be true gaming bliss.

Instead, we're going to have to wade through this crapfest of Kinect, touchscreen controllers, motion controllers, not being able to buy used, etc. etc. etc. Just what is going on here? mad.gif

Crap-Fest 2012/2013. It would be nice to play new Zelda games without motion controllers!

It always funny when people justify getting a Wii for fitness reasons! Ha! Ha! Noobs!

6h? Then you're lucky.

It took FOURTEEN DANG HOURS to download Skyrim on my connection.

They're not doing away with physical media, it's not going to be digital download only. The article simply suggests they might replace the optical drive with a flash reader.

teens can go to gamestop and buy game disks, and play it.
now they requiring console users to make an account, enter their credit card, download, then install.
thats too much process, and not everyone has a credit card account, specially teens.
and not everyone has an internet connection.

Yay no more consoles! a slow console death! or the latter of the two, much more advanced developed games for mature audience! since little kiddies dont have credit cards and the requirements! tongue.gif

what games does your cockatoo bird like too play tongue.gif

Actually it does suggest that it could possibly rely exclusively on digital distribution. tongue.gif

It's not known if games will actually be offered on physical media at retail or if the console will exclusively rely on digital distribution.

That's what started all the talk of it.

Most of the world isn't tech savvy dude. Apparently you think of OCN or other forums when you think of gaming. The reality is the exact opposite. People (console gamers AND parents) love the idea of just buying a game and playing it - no additional steps.

You didn't take in consideration 3 difference scenarios:

1) Parts of the U.S. where super speed internet just isn't offered. 2) Countries outside the U.S. where the internet is sparse and/or very expensive. 3) The lack of a need. If you didn't download games would most people even need such high speeds? Things like iTunes purchases aren't large enough to demand top-tier internet. So with the casual console gamer you're basically saying they should upgrade to a more expensive package they otherwise wouldn't even want/need/see the difference in.

It's a lot more complicated than people "just getting internet".
