Sure, most people dont use that amount but those who do benefit from quad channel. Then again I would be as happy with dual channel with 4 sticks per channel.

well yeah added dimm slots are a bonus of course as you said, but I was referring to the actual performance benefits of quad channel, which are almost pointless for desktop users.

Is there any solid info on Piledriver to use AM3+ 990FX, or will there be a new socket/chipset. Sorry if this is a bit cliche. :/

Piledriver is the design of the CPU.

Vishera (FX that uses Piledriver) will be using AM3+. Trinity (APU that uses Piledriver) will be on FM2.

There will be new chipset on AM3+, 1000 series. Existing 900 series should be compatible with Vishera.

I see, thanks mate. smile.gif Didn't read the whole article there, I hope this turns out better than the original BD (81xx), or I'll have to switch to an i3. frown.gif

That depends on application. Its quite useful for some stuff that actually makes use of that bandwidth assuming CPU itself is powerful enough for that type of applications ofc to be able to saturate the quad channel bandwidth.

If you only play games then ofc you do not see difference in real world between dual, triple or quad channel.

Benchmarking and compression are all (That most people on this site would do) that show meaningful differences, if I recall correctly. Feelf ree to correct me if I'm wrong though.

global foundries have plans for 22/20nm node for some sort of 3d transistor tech

late 2012 will be the start of risk production on 22/20nm product from global foundries .. so we might see amd 22nm products by 2013

so steamroller should be on 22nm

your saying amd will stick with 32nm for another 2years?

i can see amd rolling 22nm by the mid to late 2013 ..

you have to remember that amd is trying to make a yearly refresh of bulldozer

and they have their plans layed out to us ... 2013 = steamroller 2014 = excavator 2015 = something that i dont remember

do we have any concrete evidence on the ipc side of things or its just wild speculation from your part?

I'm okay with 28nm, because it seems very competitive with Intel's 22nm. At least, TSMC says theirs is. I think TSMC went as far as to say their 28nm was better than Intel's 22nm.

tsmc says many things yet can they deliver?

they didnt for two generations of products .. both amd and nvidia had to delay their gpus because of that on two generation.. 40nm and 28nm ... wanna guess what any company will do to make sure they remain in business?

we are doing fine .. i assure you we are doing great

glofo should have 22nm ready for mass production in 2013 if no complication arise

Not bashing, I hope they get back in the ring with intel as consumers we need the competition
Not quit the race, just in the pits for a few laps. AMD will continue to push in the right direction to once take the crown from Intel. But its no longer a competition for them as they switched up their game. Intel will run the high end workstation market probably for the next few years. But AMD already dominates the budget gamer and user platform with their APU's. Which is a great marketing strategy, if they cant compete with what Intel has to offer then work in an entirely different category. Sure Intel has been offering integrated GPU's with their processors since Sandy Bridge. But honestly AMD's APU's are in a league of their own. If Trinity can offer better core performance then Phenom II like promised. Then AMD will be back to their roots of providing the best value for the buck, as im sure Trinity chips will/should be fairly cheap.

My guess is deadline, they most likely had to push the architecture out the door because it was delayed far too long. I guess this is where the "a unfinished architecture" rumor comes from.
