[Fixes] Catalyst Drivers Error & OC & Eyefinity & General Issues - Page 3

Thread Starter

Multi-GPU and Eyefinity crashes are all related to the optimization (3D settings) and Eyefinity 2.1 enhacement in the Official WHQL 12.3 as release note below.

BSOD 116 is mostly related to hardware, not because it's defect but the optimization might peg certain hardware harder than RC11. The CPU, RAM. motherboard and GPUs need to increase or lower voltage even on stock clocks.

Crashes with certain games could be related to Dx11 and Dx10, the game itself and the Eyefinity panels. 12.3 drivers passed the Microsoft and AMD lab. Could be the Eyefinity 2.1 enhancement only tested with the panels listed here AMD Eyefinity Compatible Display Panels with an updated EDID. Outside of this is a hit or miss. Compatibility issue.

Maybe that explains why some users with multi-GPU and Eyefinity have no issues at all.

AMD ZeroCore Power State

Have seen few threads having issues with crash "after system long idles". This is to help you identify the source of the problems to rectify.

1. ZeroCore Power State has nothing to do with system standby. It's only the card and nothing else. It enters ZeroCore State to minimize power consumption during idle few seconds after monitor is OFF in standby mode. When the card is in ZeroCore state, the stock fan cooler is not spinning. You have to use power meter to know if it's in ZeroCore State using waterblock because there's no fan to indicate the card power state.

Please note, ZeroCore Technology is embedded in GPU available for 7000 series. ZeroCore will only work if you plug monitor to DVI port. It will not if HDMI and DisplayPort are in use. For multi-GPU with multi-monitor setup, the primary GPU will not enter power saving state but only the slave/secondary card(s) will as shown in video below.

This will help you to identify the crash is due to the card in ZeroCore State or other reasons such as Windows Themes, Screen Saver or due to overclocking or other conflicting applications or OS customizations.

2. Is your crash related to the available sleep state? You can check by typing "powercfg -availablesleepsates" as shown below. You should have S1 or S3 (suspend to RAM or Disk) available. Check how it is set in Windows Power Options or in the motherboard BIOS.

Availablesleepstates.JPG

3. Is the crash related to device preventing the system to enter Sleep or Hibernate State? Type "powercfg -requests". It will tell you "none" or what device is preventing it for you to disable or turn it off.

Powercfg requests.JPG

4. Is the crash related to overclocking CPU, motherboard and system RAM? This is the most common culprit with unstable OC settings. The settings might pass all stress testings but not stable enough for the system to come out of sleep/hibernate state without crash or BSOD.

You will notice all the errors from #2, #3 and #4 above if you pay attention to the debug code. The debug code will indicate and stuck at cretain code or also known as boot block because the BIOS is not able to complete the cycle restoring to prior working state.

If you have something to add, please share it smile.gif

hey ken1649, thanks for the great info. how or when do i go about running those dos commands? can i do this after the fact?

i recently built a system with an i2600k (not overclocked) p8z68 deluxe/gen3 (bios 0302) radeon 7970 corsair vengeance 16gb(running xmp#1-1600mhz) latest and greatest drivers including the latest intel mei i have disabled the serial port, realtek nic, bluetooth, and the internal gpu in the bios.

i've always had an issue with my computer where i leave for a long period of time, computer idles, screensaver starts after 15mins of idle, "turn off the display" starts after 30minutes of idle and the asus monitor light turns to amber. i goto sleep, i wake up, i come back to my computer, i try to wake up the screen by moving the mouse or pressing the keyboard and it doesn't "wake up". the asus monitor light is still amber and my screen is black. the computer is still powered on, all the fans are still spinning and all the lights are still blinking. the keyboard and mouse are also illuminated which leads me to think that the computer is powered on. the monitor is a new asus vh-model 23" and the light is amber. oddly enough, i can ping my computer using my laptop. and i can also RDP my computer from my laptop which i do to restart the pc. i can also access shares and drives remotely with c$ and what not. so the nic seems to be responding. the drives seem to be responding. so my pc is not hibernating nor is it in sleep mode. i never touch the physical power button. the only way i can get out of this is by pressing the hard reset button on my case. i've double checked the hibernation settings with powercfg -h:off and verified that there is no hibernation system file on the root of c:\.

i've tried disabling PLL without any luck. i've tried disabling the different sleep states in the bios also and those dont seem to help the issue. i've tried multiple versions of the ati drivers from version 11rc to 12.1 to 12.5beta. im currently on the 12.5beta and it seems to have helped. i have only experienced this 'blackout' one time since being on 12.5beta. i dont think i get a BSOD, but then again i can't tell cuz the screen is dark lol.

i just dont know what else i can do to fix this. any help is greatly appreciated. thanks all

Have you tried to enable/disable CPU power saving fearures? Also try don't use screen saver or other GPU tweak utilities/dont overclock the GPU. Try that first, I have tested all Catalyst versions with 7970s can't reproduce the issues many users have as yours. Sorry I can't go into more details as I can't type very well in a car using portable.

i have an asus p8z68 deluxe/gen3 mobo, and i've disabled the EPU settings and what not. should i disable the S1/S2/S3 settings in the bios also?

it just happened to me again. i was using logmein in attempt to gain access to my home pc from work. it was working earlier this morning, but now i can't connect at all. seems like my main rig is stupid now frown.gif

i am using logmein to get to another computer at home and i was able to ping my gaming machine and even access \\gamingpc\c$\. so the box is on. i just tried to send a shutdown -i command, but for some reason it doesn't seem to be working. i just tried sending a psshutdown -r command as well. well the box is rebooted or shutdown. its no longer pinging lol. oh man i have no idea whats going on there at home frown.gif

yeah im not using any software to overclock or tweak the gpu. i have msi afterburner and kombuster installed just for stress testing and checking out load temps. afterburner is running stock settings and is not configured to startup on windows logon.

if i dont use a screensaver, what should i do to go about avoiding screen burning on my lcds? should i just manually press the physical power button on my monitor? i dont really have any issues with that. can i set a screensaver to 10 minutes but with "none" screensaver so my computer automatically locks after 10 minutes?

it just seems like a really odd problem. i initially thought that the dvi or hdmi connection might be a problem if my video card doesn't recognize a device is plugged in. i recently switched from dvi to using hdmi(using a converter plug) but it doesn't seem to be helping the situation.

Send a PM to Hambone (scroll this tthread) to have a look here. He will be able to tell you which CPU settings. I am not familiar with Z68 BIOS. Sorry again, can't type in details, I hate using portable virtual keyboard.

Oh the screen saver, you can set the monitor off after certain idle period in Windows Power Options.
