My Old School AGP Bench Summary Thread - Page 12

Holy s**t, I was just checking out the team page, Rasparthe, and realized that you've put up 2167 team points on HWBot.

That is out of control. I need to bust out the Radeon 7500 and start pulling my weight.

Artikbot, you need to get that RMA sorted out and start benching! I just passed you on the team standings, which is clearly unacceptable. I got bored this week at work (Christmas is slow) and started benching my Macbook Air, so it's a little cheap, I'll admit. lachen.gif

Happy Holidays to all the AGPers out there.

Merry Christmas! Still four more people in front of me on the team rankings but I'm leaving the country today so the new year is time to get back into AGP benching!

By the way, missed this chip, just refused to spend more than $60 on such an old chip. Regretting it already.

That's a shame, you guys would have been so great together. Still, I see Gallatins up for sale pretty often; you'll get another crack at it.

I've been stalking this one. Although I noticed that some HWBot folks had put up fast AGP benches using AMD AM* processors in AM2 boards. Thoughts on whether it'd be better to get one of those or stick with 775 and Core 2?

The chip will work well for most things but is overkill for a lot of the benchmarks that you will be running for AGP cards. Most of the older cards can only run 01, 03, and Aquamark all of which don't benefit from multi-threads (or at least minimally). 06 does benefit from the added quad-power, but I have found the ultimate AGP chip is a high multi Wolfdale chip. The best candidate being a e5800. The e5xxx series has a 200 FSB and high multi's which make it easier for overclocking with the Asrock 4Core since it has a definite FSB wall around 300 if you don't do any modifications to the board (which is why the Extreme chips are popular since you can just change the multiplier).

The AM2+ board works fine as well, some guys find that works good as well but you have the same issue and the only competitive chips are the Deneb and Callisto cores (Phenom II chips), so make sure the board will run those. thumb.gif

You know what, I'm with you, I agree about the Wolfdale. You're talking about headroom to scale up an architecture that has better instructions per cycle to begin with. And what really brought me around was the realization that your headroom is limited with Kentsfield almost no matter what: if you're on a DDR board, you're limited by your RAM clocks if you're starting at 266 MHz, and on a DDR2 board you're limited by a less efficient architecture with a higher TDP that may not make it to 4 GHz without some serious cold.

So maybe to slay Wolfies I need to be a Wolfie?

More AGP benches to come, I'm still tweaking clocks with Aquamark on the 4670, and the 7500 may make an appearance as soon as next week.

Dropped the old Diablotek Radeon 7500 into the 865G board last night. Fired up GPU-Z.

Clocks are 162 MHz core, 110 MHz RAM. mellowsmiley.gif Stock clocks are supposedly 260/180.

The card supposedly has a 128 bit bus width. Uhhh...not exactly. More like 64. Whopping 1.8 GB/s.

The good news is, no one's posted any scores in any boint-scoring benchmark for a 64 bit 7500.

First I had to find a tool to overclock it. AMD GPU Clock Tool and ATI Tray Tools couldn't recognize the clocks correctly or drive them any higher. Finally got somewhere with Powerstrip.

It does have an aluminum heatsink and fan. Too bad they're loosely attached with plastic spring pegs and crappy TIM. The heatsink covers the RAM chips but doesn't contact them. Going to fix those things up with some small bolts and thermal adhesive pads. Then see how far we can clock it up. Benches to follow.

Doubled the clocks on it. It's amazing what a well-mounted heatsink will do. Benched at 320/220 before artifacts started to take over. 3DMark2001 went from 3300 to 4700(!)
