700 Dollar PC Capable of Running Battlefield 3? - Page 12

A GTX 480 requires a 600W PSU minimum. That's like 1/7 of his budget right there. I'm trying to build one for $700, but I don't think it's possible. The monitor is just going to break the budget every time, even if I am looking at a cheap one (~$150)

oh shoot it looks like he already bought it. $700 budget is quite the challenge... I'm guessing you didn't need a monitor after all?

It doesn't really need 600W to overclock both the CPU and GPU, but more headroom is always nice, especially on a lesser reliable brand.

To give you an idea of GPU wattage, I used to run 2x 5770s which would have "required" a 600W PSU, and it barely ran 250-300W for BF3 with my CPU and both GPUs overvolted and overclocked. A single 5770 with a i7 920 (which eats up more power than SB) runs at about 200-230W when playing a game like Crysis. I could probably run a 3rd 5870 under my PSU as long as I ran my GPUs at stock settings; I remember those people with tri-fire 5850s/5870s were running 750-850W PSUs had no problems at all.

Nope, no monitor, mouse, keyboard, HDD or OS

contact them they should refund you the difference on the vid card since it went on sale so soon after you bought it. go figure you would order it a day after it comes off sale and a day before it goes back on sale lol.

My idea for keeping the cost down.
- i5 2500k ($200)
- cheap mini ATX mobo ($50)
- 7870 ($350 when it releases)
- 500 watt or less PSU ($50)
- 6 GB RAM ($50)
- 320 GB HDD ($50)
- no case run it on a test bench or your motherboard box

I know its kinda extremely but you are squeezing out the most performance you can and you can always purchase a case later on.

I think you missed the last page or two where the OP already listed his parts and free HDD, which actually turn out a lot better than what you recommended.
