MS Windows XP x86/x64 Question

Thread Starter
This may have been posted somewhere in this forum, but the search keywords return so many results that it'll take hours to find the topic- if one was ever created.

What is the difference between the x86 and x64 versions of WinXP Pro? It's obvious that x64 supports memory and hard disk space values much higher than that of x86, but for the average consumer, what would be different?

Running AMD Athlon64 3700, 1GB OZC, Seagate 250GB Sata, and Leadtek 6600GT- would it make sense to upgrade to x64? If so, what will be gained from the upgrade? Any comments would be appreciated.

With that rig it may benift some because of increased performance but some applications/games are not compatiable with x64.

IMO do the upgrade. . .some programs may have a conflict, but not many . .and the only hardware issue ive had is the M$ fingerprint reader. . . but the way that i look at is that i paid for an x64 processor. . .why not use it to its potential? . . . otherwise its a a waste (not that you can buy many x86's now)

I've used both, and as long as you're sporting an AMD processor, x64 is an upgrade. Intel's implementation is a bit ass-backwards.

x64 right now isn't much better than x86. The only time you will see x64 (currently) beat x86 is for an application specifically coded to take advantage of 64 bit computing. I don't know of any offhand, but I'm sure there are some out there. You will have a much more difficult time finding drivers for things with x64, and, in general, the small speed boosts you will see in very specific programs are not worth the incompatability tradeoffs.

I wouldn't bother, I had it running on a test computer here. The os environment seemed very snappy, not major software issues until we tried installing a 3 month old SONY camera. On other computers it comes up as a Mass Storage Device, but x64 wouldn't let it work without proper drivers, which SONY never have.

Honestly their software support is abysmal. Even for laptops you can't find updated driver.
