Overclocking with AMD Athlon II X3 455

Thread Starter
I'm new here, so sorry if this is in the wrong place.

I got an athlon 455 a few weeks ago and a couple of days ago I decided to try and overclock it
This is my system:
  • OCZ StealthXstreme 500W PSU
  • Asus M5A78-m lx
  • AMD Athlon II X3 455 @4ghz stable
  • 2x 4GB Corsair XMS3 1333mhz
  • Xigmatek Gaia heatsink

I've got the clock @ 246 and the multiplier @ x16.5 at 1.485v. everything else is running at near stock.
can I up the voltage or should I reduce the multiplier and increase the clock? I know the clock can go past 260 without a problem

what are your load temps like?

is your northbridge running stock? overclock that if not. 2600-2800 is common.

if that's volts in BIOS then you can go further.

this board will probably shut you down when vrms get overheated. try cooling those.

load temps are 36C at 100% using intel burn in.
I'll try overclocking the northbridge and i'll fit a heatsink to the vrms. how high is a safe voltage?
Keep load temps under 60* and keep volts under 1.55v, shouldnt need to go that high.

Ok thanks, but is it better to increase clock and lower multiplier or keep the multiplier at maximum? does it make much of a difference?

Generally your looking for a happy medium, or sweet spot if you will. There isnt often a dramatic increase one way or the other, but do definitely try to get the northbridge oc'ed, as that does make a big difference with those chips, you can even sacrifice a few ghz of core clock speed to do it if you need to.
