Help selecting a new CPU - Page 4

Ok, $500 brings you close to Core 2 Duo including 1GB RAM. Here is an example for $550 (don't worry, I will get a list of parts that will keep you below $500).

MoBo: GIGABYTE GA-965P-S3 Socket T (LGA 775) Intel P965 $117.99
CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo E6300 Conroe 1.86GHz $180.00
RAM: G.SKILL 1GB (2 x 512MB) DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) $129.99
Case: COOLER MASTER Centurion 5 CAC-T05-UW $44.99
PSU: FSP Group (Fortron Source) AX450-PN, 12cm FAN 450W $48.99

Total: $521.96 + $28.24 shipping = $550.20

Opting for a D915 instead of the E6300 will bring the total down to like $505, including shipping.

The cheapest solution would be socket 939, so you can keep your current RAM:

MoBo: DFI LANPARTY UT nF4 Ultra-D Socket 939 NVIDIA nForce4 Ultra $104.99
CPU: AMD Opteron 165 Denmark 1.8GHz Socket 939 $159.99
Case: COOLER MASTER Centurion 5 CAC-T05-UW $44.99
PSU: FSP Group (Fortron Source) AX450-PN, 12cm FAN 450W $48.99
Total: $358.96 + $26.45 shipping = $385.41

I hope those Opterons get back in stock soon... I do believe this is the best you can get for socket 939 (good stepping Opty 165 hits 3.0GHz)

Now that I think about it what would be a good GPU for the 775 board that Chozart selected.
