AMD FX 8150 -core at 5.0 GHz, how much voltage is too much?

hello, just signed up here... a few days ago i picked up an FX 8150 black, and ASUS mobo to upgrade my machine from a Phenom II X4 955 black. i installed it using the stock cooler. i decided the next day to get a cooler master hyper 612 PWM and replaced the original heatsink.

it seems to do a very good job, and i was able to then bump it up to 5.02 GHz by giving it a little over 1.5 volts. it was able boot into windows 7, get on IRC, firefox, etc but after about 9 or 10 seconds into the linpack test using OCCT, the machine shut down on me.

so, i was wondering... how much voltage is too much for these things, and how high would you expect me to have to set it for a stable 5 GHz? i've got i bumped down to 4.71 GHz for the time being, using 1.428 volts. (i could probably drop that notch and still have it work)

at this speed it gave me no problems with OCCT running over night. my idle temps are 21C and it maxed out in OCCT's full load at 43C. when does it really start to get to be a dangerous amount of voltage for this CPU? does it not matter as long as the temps stay down?

i'd love to hear any advice on this, thanks! biggrin.gif

I got scared at 1.5V. But that was based on what I heard from others.

that was my thought too, but then i saw that some guys were able to overclock an 8150 to about 8.5 GHz by using about 2.0 volts. i know that was probably cooled by liquid nitrogen, but that got me to thinking that maybe 1.6 or a little more might be safe as long as the temps stay reasonable? i might be wrong, which is why i asked here heh.

the last thing i want to do is fry my brand new $250 CPU!

was there a blue screen it would help others if you listed your rig specs. With an instant shut down its most likely a blue screen what's your PSU?

Technically, if the temps are ok, you're good to go but

IIRC
1.525 is considered ok with watercooling
1.475 with air cooling

Just my 2cents.gif

what are you cooling with ?

nvm. lol. a hyper 212 will cool a BD at 5.0ghz ? if that's true, I'm very impressed. smile.gif
I can't really speak on the FX series, but I ran my 1090t at 1.55v for a long time and never had any problems. Check out the Bulldozer club here. http://www.overclock.net/t/1139726/amd-fx-bulldozer-owners-club
I'm sure they have all the info you need.

Generally speaking, every die size reduction, lowered voltage usage with .05 - .1

So if 1.55 was "ballsy" on 45nm. 1.5 would be quite ballsy on 32nm (bulldozer).

I see this is a bit of an older thread, I tried 1.4875v at 5.0ghz, and nothin. BSOD as soon as I tried to Validate =/
